Liberty Notches Place in Program History
Due to inclement weather, Friday's tournament matches were moved indoors to the Sports Racket in Lynchburg. Saturday's contests in the invitational were contested at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts on campus. Besides the Lady Flames, players from James Madison, Longwood and Lynchburg College participated in the event.
Veteran Martyna Hanusz and newcomer Stephanie Brown led the successful start to the season for Liberty with unbeaten weekends. The two teamed up to go 3-0 in doubles, while Hanusz won both of her singles matches and Brown captured her only singles contest. In her singles match, Brown rallied from a 5-2 deficit to even up the opening set, before dropping the tiebreaker. She then rebounded to take the final two sets against James Madison's Kristin Nimitz for a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Altogether, the Lady Flames went 13-3 in singles play in the tournament. In addition to Brown and Hanusz, Liberty newcomers Jordan Jenkins, Hannah Fick and Fabiana Gouveia went unbeaten in their first weekends of singles as Lady Flames. The trio each posted 2-0 marks. Junior Livia Branco also enjoyed a good weekend in singles, as she took two of her three matches.
In doubles, Liberty went 6-2 on the weekend. While Hanusz and Brown were the only unbeaten pairing, the teams of Jenkins and Fick and Gouveia and Davis also had solid showings. Jenkins and Fick went 2-1 for the tournament, while Gouveia and Davis split a pair of matches.
The Lady Flames continue their fall season this weekend in Raleigh, N.C., at the N.C. State Wolfpack Tournament. The three-day event runs from Friday through Sunday.
