Karyl Bacon, who led all players in both kills and digs at the Liberty Invitational Presented by Pepsi, was named the Big South Freshman of the Week.

Liberty outside hitter/defensive specialist Karyl Bacon picked up the second award of her young career today. An all-tournament team member after leading the Lady Flames to a 2-1 record at the Liberty Invitational Presented by Pepsi, Bacon has been named the Big South New Balance Freshman of the Week.

A 5-6 native of Temecula, Calif., Bacon posted double-doubles in each of her first three appearances in a Liberty uniform. She led all tournament performers in kills (45) and digs (66) and shared the tournament lead with six aces.

Bacon was the lone player to notch a double-double in the Lady Flames' 3-0, season-opening sweep of Howard, tallying 10 kills and 10 digs versus the Bison. The following day, Bacon paced all players in both kills (18) and digs (27), as Liberty defeated Duquesne by a 3-1 count. In the final match of the tournament, an Evansville 3-1 victory over Liberty, the freshman again totaled a match-high in digs (20), while adding 17 kills.

Bacon and the rest of the Lady Flames, off to their best start to a season since 1996, will travel to VCU for the 3rd Degree Sportswear Invitational, this Friday and Saturday. Liberty's first of three matches at VCU will be a 4:30 p.m. Friday tilt against Maryland.
