The 17th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament was successfully contested at London Downs Golf Club in Forest, Va., on June 15. A sold-out group of 120 golfers battled for prizes in four flights.

The winning team was captained by Brian Betham, owner of Universal T's and a tournament committee member. His team, which also included Ed Barnhouse, Jeremiah Collins and Erik Sorenson, won the tournament by shooting 20-under on the day. The second-place Liberty team of Jeff Barber, Louis Cambeletta, Robb Egel and Scott Wolf shot 15-under.

Skill prizes were awarded for longest putt, two longest drives and four closest to the pin on each par three. A hole-in-one prize was offered on hole three. The Mabry Automotive Group sponsored the hole-in-one and would have given the winner a choice of any car from any of its dealers priced at $25,000 or less if they successfully hit a hole-in-one. One of the prime prizes was a Chick-fil-A Odyssey two-ball putter valued at more than $175, which was won by Rich Frakes, who nailed a 15-foot putt on the 18th hole.

Four flights were awarded prizes on the day with a total of 11 team winners crowned. In addition, more than 45 golfers who purchased the mulligan package received door prizes supplied by Lynchburg area businesses, for such things as dinners at quality dining establishments, golf equipment, high-end men's jewelry and Liberty apparel. Every participant received a substantial gift bag which included a Liberty golf shirt and hat, tournament golf balls and other gifts, certificates and coupons supplied by sponsors.

Sponsorship support for the event was unsurpassed in previous events. Major sponsors included Chick-fil-A Wards Road (title), Panera Bread (presenting/practice tee), UBS Financial (ball), LU Bookstore (shirt), LU Dining (drinks), L.A. Communications (bag drop), Athletic Republic Sports Training (cart) and the Mabry Automotive Group (hole-in-one).

Proceeds from the Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament are used to finance special projects within the athletics department. Proceeds from the 2006 tournament were used to install a points-fouls board at the Vines Center. Proceeds from the current tournament are expected to go toward a second points-fouls board being installed at the Vines Center as well as converting the scoreboard system in the arena to fully wireless.

The date for the 18th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament has been tentatively set for June 13, 2008.
