Fresh off a nationally-recognized turnaround in 2006, the Flames football program continues to draw attention heading into the 2007 season, as the Lindy's College Football preview magazine has Liberty ranked No. 25 in its preseason FCS/Division I-AA Top 25.

Liberty finished the 2006 campaign with a 6-5 record, matching the best turnabout in the nation after posting a 1-10 mark in 2005. The resurgence of the program was capped off by 14 players receiving Big South all-conference accolades, the most of any program in the league, and first-year head coach Danny Rocco being tabbed the conference's Coach of the Year.

The Flames are poised to continue their upward trend in 2007 as Liberty returns 39 letterwinners, including 10 offensive starters, eight defensive starters and two starters on the special teams units.

The Lindy's College Football annual preview publication recognized Liberty's strong returning class and has tabbed the Flames the preseason favorite to claim the Big South Conference crown, which would be the program's first since conference play started in 2002.

Defending conference champion Coastal Carolina was also among the 25 teams receiving a preseason national ranking, coming in at No. 21. However, the publication believes Liberty, who lost its four I-AA games by a combined 13 points in 2006, will have enough firepower to dethrone the three-time league champions for the conference title.

Two-time defending national champion Appalachian State is favored to win an unprecedented third-consecutive title, as this year's preseason No. 1. Montana follows closely behind the Mountaineers at No. 2, with the Minutemen of Massachusetts taking the No. 3 ranking. McNeese State and Wofford round out the Top 5 in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
