Negron and Nanry Named to Big South Conference First Team; Three Other Flames Receive Second Team Honors
Negron (So., Kingwood, Texas) in his first season with the Flames was named to the all-conference first team as the second baseman. The sophomore enters the week ranked fifth in the Big South in batting with a .376 average and tied for fifth with 70 hits. In addition, the Liberty leadoff hitter also is fifth in the conference with a .461 on base percentage. The second baseman leads the Flames with 22 multiple hit games, including seven three-hit games. He also has the second longest hitting streak of the season of 14 games (April 20-May 13) and has plated 45 runs.
Nanry (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) was selected to the all-conference first team as the designated hitter. In his final season with the Flames, he is currently ninth in the conference with 42 RBI and is tied for sixth with 16 doubles. Nanry enters the 2007 Big South Championship batting .308 with 20 multiple-hit games and 10 multiple-RBI contests. The designated hitter has two five-hit games and seven contests with three or more hits. He was named Big South Player of the Week for Feb. 21.
Giammaresi (R-Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) was named to both the conference's second team and all-academic team. In his first season as Liberty's starting third baseman, he is batting .317 with a .405 on base percentage. His 16 doubles ties him for sixth in the conference in the category. Giammaresi also sports a .923 fielding percentage with 11 errors in 142 chances. In the classroom, the third baseman is a five time member of the Dean's List and three Big South Presidential Honor Rolls.
John (Sr., Linwood, N.J.) caps a strong senior season by being named to the all-conference second team as a reliever. The senior has posted a 2.57 ERA and a 4-2 record in Flames' leading 26 appearances. The right-hander is among the Big South leaders in appearances and games finished. He has also recorded a team-leading five saves. During his Liberty career, John has averaged a strikeout per inning pitched. He enters the week with a 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio as he has struck out 48 and walked 16 in 49 innings.
Young (Jr., Fountain Valley, Calif.) earns Liberty's final selection all-conference selection by being named to the second team in the outfield. Despite missing 11 games this season due to injury, the Flames' center fielder leads the team and is fourth in the conference in batting with a .381 average. He is also among the conference leaders in slugging percentage (.586), runs scored (49), hits (69), and home runs (8). Young had an 18-game hit streak, the longest by a Liberty player this season. He earned Big South Player of the Week honors for March 12.
No. 3 seed Liberty will meet No. 4 seed VMI tonight in Game 3 of the Big South Championship at the Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
