Lady Flames Take Fifth Straight With 7-2 Win over Charleston Southern to Sweep Series
The victory raises the Lady Flames overall record to 27-16 and 5-1 in Big South action. The win, Liberty's fifth-straight and 12th out of their last 14 games, gives Liberty its second-straight Big South Conference series. The loss drops Charleston Southern's record to 13-36 on the year and 2-10 in conference play.
The Lady Flames jumped out to a quick four-run lead in the bottom of the first inning as Dawn Jeffs led off the frame with an infield single just behind the pitcher's circle.
After Shannon McKain moved Jeffs to second on a sacrifice bunt and Jessica Moore was issued a walk, Ashley Williams doubled to center field, plating Jeffs for the inning's first run.
And for the third-straight game, Sarah Swor connected on a home run, this time hitting a three-run blast over the fence in left field, marking her fifth home run of the year to give Liberty the 4-0 advantage.
Charleston Southern cut into Liberty's lead in the top of the second inning as Jillian LaFrance hit her third home run of the season, sending a solo shot out to straightaway center field to trim the Lady Flames' lead to three runs, 4-1.
However, the Lady Flames added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning on four hits. A double down the left-field line off the bat of McKain drove in Jeffs.
After Moore singled up the middle to give Liberty runners at the corners, McKain and Moore successfully pulled off the double steal, allowing McKain to cross the plate. Williams followed with a RBI single up the middle to drive in Moore and push Liberty's lead to six runs, 7-1.
The Buccaneers scored their second run of the game in the top of the fifth as Amy Trenkamp singled to the gap in right-center field. After moving to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out, Megan Hall singled to center field, scoring Trenkamp from third and cutting Liberty's lead to five runs, 7-2.
Sarah Ellis picked up her second victory on the weekend to move her record to 11-6 on the year. The sophomore allowed two runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings of work, before Swor relieved Ellis and tossed 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
Freshman Caitlin Allen suffered the loss, falling to 2-6 on the year, as she allowed four runs on three hits in just 2/3 innings of work. Amanda Nobles allowed three runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched, before Whitney James finished off the final four innings, scattering four hits in effective relief.
Offensively, Liberty first four hitters in the line-up each recorded multiple hits, led by Ashley Williams 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Jeffs (2-for-4 with two runs scored), McKain 2-for-3 (with a run scored and a RBI) and Moore (2-for-3 with two runs scored) followed.
Brittany Giannini recorded two of the Buccaneers five hits as the center fielder was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate.
The Lady Flames return to the Liberty Softball Field on Tuesday when they host cross town opponent Lynchburg College. First pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is schedule for 3 p.m.
