Sixth-Inning Rally Enables Lady Flames to Complete Doubleheader Sweep
With the pair of victories on the afternoon, Liberty raises its overall record to 26-16 on the season and 4-1 in Big South action, having claimed victory in its last four-straight league games. The losses drop Charleston Southern to 13-35 on the year and 2-9 in conference play.
Swor continued her hot hitting as the designated player drove in Ashley Williams, who reached on a two-base error to start the second, on a double to the gap in right center field, giving Liberty an early 1-0 lead.
Charleston Southern tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when Amanda Nobles reached base on an infield single back to the pitcher's circle. After swiping her third base of the season to get to second, Nobles scored on a base hit to left field off the bat of Amy Trenkamp, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Buccaneers took their first lead of the afternoon as they mounted a two-out rally in the sixth inning. Ashley Conway dropped in a single just beyond the reach of Courtney Johnson at third base. Jillian LaFrance followed with a RBI double off the base of the fence in left-center field, driving in pinch runner Brittany Giannini and giving Charleston Southern the one-run lead, 2-1.
But the lead was short lived as a pair of home runs allowed Liberty to regain the lead for good. Jessica Moore started a three-run frame for Liberty with her team-leading 13th home run, hitting an opposite field solo home run to right field.
Ashley Williams followed with a single up the middle and two batters later, Swor struck again for Liberty as the designated player turned on an inside pitch and hit her second home of the day and fourth of the year, sending a two-run shot over the fence down the left-field line.
And starting pitcher Terra Lowe made the lead stand as the senior got the Buccaneers to go down in order in the top of the seventh, securing her 10th victory over the year. Lowe scattered five hits and allowed two runs to up her record to 10-5, while fanning nine batters to mark her second-highest strikeout total of the year.
LaFrance suffered the loss for Charleston Southern, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits, fanning six batters in six innings of work to fall to 6-10 on the season.
Swor paced the way for Liberty as the senior was 2-for-3 in the second game with three RBI, helping her finish the day 5-for-6 from the plate with five RBI and two home runs. Williams followed as the catcher was 2-for-3 and Moore was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, pushing her hitting streak to seven games.
Charleston Southern scattered its five team hits amongst five different players as Trenkamp (1-for-4), Jill Shonel (1-for-2), Conway (1-for-3), LaFrance (1-for-3) and Noble (1-for-3) each recorded a base knock during the contest.
The Lady Flames and the Buccaneers will close out their three-game Big South series tomorrow morning with the third and final game, starting at 10 a.m. Game time has been moved up from 1 p.m. because of the threat of inclement weather in the greater Lynchburg area throughout Saturday.
