Fenasse and McConnell Named to Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team
Liberty's Mathieu Fenasse and Ian McConnell have been honored for their efforts off the golf course as the pair were recently named to the 2014 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team.
For the second time in golf program history, Liberty has had a pair of golfers named to the top collegiate golf academic team in the country in the same year.
Last year, McConnell and Max McKay were named to the 2013 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team.
McConnell is the third golfer in program history to be named to multiple Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Teams. He is joined on the short list by Jonathan Dickinson (2004 and 2005) and Preston Dembowiak (2010 and 2011).
Liberty has had 11 golfers in program history named to a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team, which is organized by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
To be eligible for the academic listing, a golfer much be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 (Division I standard) and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2.
A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
A total of 207 players in Division I, 75 in Division II and 11 in NAIA earned the honor. Additionally, 46 honorees were added to the previously released Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team.
This past golf season, Fenasse and McConnell both played a part in Liberty claiming its third Big South title in the last four years and advancing to NCAA Regional play for the fourth year in a row. Liberty finished the year ranked No. 35 in the country by Golfstat and No. 38 by Golfweek.
Fenasse ranked third on Liberty's roster in 2013-14 with a 73.18 stroke average and played 11 of his 33 rounds of golf at par or better during his junior season. The native of Lias, France, posted four top 10 finishes and ranked No. 139 individually in the country by Golfstat.
McConnell rounded out his final season at Liberty by ranking fourth on the team with a 75.33 stroke average. The senior was one of only two golfers to play all 36 rounds for the Flames this past season and the Riverview, Florida, native finished his career with the ninth-best career stroke average in program history (74.73).
