Pitcher Trey Lambert has been selected as the 2014 Big South Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Graduated senior standout baseball player Trey Lambert has been selected the 2013-14 Big South Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award was announced by the conference office earlier today and voted on by the league's sports information directors.

Lambert, who graduated this past May with a 3.95 cumulative grade point average, becomes the third male student-athlete in Liberty Athletics' history to be honored with the award. Football star Pat Kelly received the award last year, while cross country standout Bruce Kit was awarded the same honor following the 2000-01 academic year.

The health promotion major finished first with 41 votes followed by Liberty football player Scott Hyland (34) and VMI track & field athlete Cabell Willis (27). Campbell softball player Shaela Churchill was awarded the Big South Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

This honor caps off a stellar athletic and academic year for the pitcher. Lambert also was named the Big South Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Big South Pitcher of the Year.

On the national level, Lambert became one of only three Liberty student-athletes in the history of the program to be named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Baseball team. The pitcher along with teammate Alex Close became the first Liberty baseball players to be named to the squad's first team in May. With his selection, Lambert became one of 24 student-athletes in Liberty athletics department history to be voted to the top academic team in the country.

The pitcher was also named the 2014 Max Rivera/Rock Royer Award winner, honoring the top graduating senior student-athlete at Liberty. The award encompasses more than just athletic ability. It recognizes the Liberty University graduating senior student-athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom and among the student body.

On the field, Lambert was selected by the league's head coaches as the Big South Pitcher of the Year and an all-conference first team member in 2014 after leading the conference in wins.  The senior also was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Atlantic All-Region team.

The right-hander finished the year with an 11-3 record with a 2.23 ERA over a career-high 109 innings.  His win total ties him with two others for the Liberty season program record for victories, while his innings pitched ranked fifth and ERA rank sixth, respectively for a season in program history.

The Tazewell, Virginia native also pitched two shutouts and recorded three complete games this past season for the 41-18 Flames. The team captain struck out 71 and walked 28 batters, while holding opponents to a .214 batting average.

Not only did he lead the Big South in wins, but the team captain was among the conference leaders in ERA (fourth), innings pitched (fifth) and opponent batting average (fourth). He played a key role in Liberty securing an NCAA Regional selection for the second consecutive year, the first time in program history.

Lambert was a member of the initial 2014 National Pitcher of the Year Watch List and was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week and a NCAA.com Performer of the Week for March 24-30.
