This past Friday, the USA Softball Women's National Team competed in a doubleheader against the Central Virginia All-Stars at Lynchburg's City Stadium. Following the games, Nick Pierce of LFSN caught up with Liberty Head Softball Coach Dot Richardson, who coached the Central Virginia All-Stars, along with former Liberty softball standout Katie Zavodny.

Playing in front of a large crowd at City Stadium, the Central Virginia All-Stars took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first in game one, before Team USA stormed back to win, 10-2. The national team then shut out its opponent, 6-0, during the second contest.

Zavodny, one of four former Lady Flames to play against Team USA on Friday, went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases while starting both games in center field. Graduated Liberty seniors Alyssa DiMartino, Marybeth Sciolino and Sammi Shivock, along with Liberty softball graduate assistant Morgan Price, also saw extended playing time during the doubleheader.

An autograph session followed the doubleheader, with fans getting signatures from Team USA, the Central Virginia All-Stars and Coach Richardson.

The USA national team conducted its selection camp at Liberty last week. A total of 24 athletes are vying to earn one of 17 spots on the Women's National Team. The final roster will be announced on June 22, and those 17 players will compete in the 2014 World Cup of Softball in Irvine, Calif., and the 2014 ISF World Championships in Haarlem, Netherlands.

Team USA competes in an exhibition doubleheader in Findlay, Ohio, today, before playing in Purcellville, Va., on Thursday. Zavodny is slated to represent Liberty on the Virginia All-Stars on Thursday, facing the national team once again.
