Oasis Hernandez (middle) is this week's Big South Women's Field Athlete of the Week.

Liberty freshman Oasis Hernandez was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Field Athlete of the Week, thanks to her stellar triple jump effort at the Roanoke/Virginia Tech Twilight Qualifier on May 8.

Hernandez extended her freshman season with her winning leap of 41-0.5, which came on her sixth and final attempt. The Kansas native qualified for the USATF Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships and also gave herself a good chance to qualify for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.

The top 48 declared athletes in the East Region will be invited to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet, to be contested May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla. With last Thursday's effort, Hernandez is currently tied with Coastal Carolina's Amirah Al-Bayinnah for first place in the Big South and 43rd place in the East Region.

Hernandez leapfrogged sophomore teammate Janae Jones for the No. 2 spot on Liberty's all-time list by one centimeter. Prior to the May 1 Liberty Twilight Qualifier, only one Lady Flame (Mia Aghaji) had ever triple jumped over 41 feet. Now Hernandez and Jones have each eclipsed the barrier during the last two weeks.

Hernandez and the Flames will be in action at the 2014 IC4A and ECAC Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, today through Sunday in Princeton, N.J.
