Complete 2007 Volleyball Schedule

Fans of the Liberty volleyball team will have plenty of opportunities to see the Lady Flames in action at the Vines Center during the 2007 campaign. The season schedule, released today, lists up to 16 home matches, including the season-opening Liberty University Invitational and the entire Big South Volleyball Championship.

For the first time since 2004, the Lady Flames will host an invitational. The two-day Liberty University Invitational features the season opener against Howard, one of three first-time opponents on the schedule, on Aug. 24. The following day, the Lady Flames will host Duquesne and Evansville.

After the invitational is completed, Liberty will only play one home match in the next 40 days. In the meantime, the team will participate in tournaments at VCU (Aug. 31-Sept. 1), Wright State (Sept. 7-8) and Villanova (Sept. 14-15). Highlighting the Lady Flames' opponents at the trio of weekend tournaments are Maryland, South Carolina and Princeton, another first-time opponent who finished 21-3 a season ago.

The Lady Flames will return to Lynchburg for a Sept. 18, non-conference tilt with James Madison, before departing for three straight road matches to open conference play. Liberty will open its conference slate at Radford on Sept. 22. A week later, the Lady Flames travel to five-time defending conference champion Winthrop.

Liberty's October schedule features seven home matches, including a season-long four-match homestand to open the month. Charleston Southern will be the opponent for the Lady Flames' first home Big South match, on Oct. 5. Presbyterian, a new Big South Conference member who will become eligible for conference championships in the fall of 2011, will square off with Liberty for the first time on Oct. 12. The Lady Flames and Blue Hose have a pair of match-ups scheduled this coming season.

A three-match road trip during mid-October includes a non-conference contest at East Tennessee State, the 2006 Atlantic Sun regular season champion, on Oct. 15. The Lady Flames' visit to the beach is also included in the swing, as Liberty will meet Charleston Southern (Oct. 19) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 20).

The month will wrap up with three home tilts the following week, beginning with a non-conference face-off versus Norfolk State. The Lady Flames will celebrate Parents' Weekend when High Point and Winthrop come to town, on Oct. 26-27, respectively.

After beginning November with two road contests, Liberty will play its final conference tournament tune-ups at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames will welcome North Carolina Central for Senior Night on Nov. 6 and will battle Radford on Nov. 10.

Head coach Shane Pinder and the Lady Flames hope history repeats itself at the Nov. 15-17 Big South Volleyball Championship at the Vines Center. The last time Liberty hosted the event, in 2001, the Lady Flames won their most recent conference tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Pinder was an assistant coach for the 2001 conference champions.

The weekend after the conference tournament, Nov. 23-24, Liberty will return to VCU for its Thanksgiving Tournament. Other teams scheduled to appear are 2006 NCAA Tournament participants Albany and Long Island. If the Lady Flames earn the Big South's automatic NCAA Tournament bid, the matches at VCU will help prepare the team for its NCAA opening-round match, which is slated for Nov. 29 or Nov. 30.
