Hernandez Posts Big Triple Jump at Roanoke
Liberty freshman Oasis Hernandez's personal-best 41-0.5 triple jump was the Flames' standout performance of the meet at Thursday's Roanoke/Virginia Tech Twilight Qualifier at Roanoke College's Bast Track.
Hernandez extended her freshman season with her winning leap of 41-0.5, which came on her sixth and final attempt. The Kansas native qualified for the USATF Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships and also gave herself a good chance to qualify for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.
The top 48 declared athletes in the East Region will be invited to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet, to be contested May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla. With Thursday's effort, Hernandez is currently tied with Coastal Carolina's Amirah Al-Bayinnah for first place in the Big South and 39th place in the East Region.
Hernandez leapfrogged current Big South Women's Field Athlete of the Week Janae Jones for the No. 2 spot on Liberty's all-time list by one centimeter. Prior to the May 1 Liberty Twilight Qualifier, only one Lady Flame (Mia Aghaji) had ever triple jumped over 41 feet. Now Hernandez and Jones have each eclipsed the barrier during the last eight days.
Yana Babbitt closed out her sophomore season in style on Thursday, hurling the javelin past her previous best of 128-6 on three of her six attempts. Babbitt's final throw reached 132-6, placing second in the competition and moving the Connecticut native up to No. 8 in program history.
Freshman Colin Schultz placed seventh in the men's 800 with a time of 1:53.91, the second-fastest time of his rookie campaign.
Liberty's next competition will be the 2014 IC4A and ECAC Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for May 16-18 in Princeton, N.J.
