Lady Flames Close Out Regular Season With 7-5 Win at PC
Liberty earned a series victory over Presbyterian College on Sunday, downing the host Blue Hose, 7-5 and holding on for the win after leading, 7-0, at PC Softball Complex.
With the win, the Lady Flames' second in a row, Liberty closes the regular season with a 10-44 record, including 4-20 in Big South play. Presbyterian College falls to 25-24 on the season, with a 10-13 mark in conference games.
Jamie Crisp batted 1-for-3, homering and driving in four runs. Kelby Allen went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored, while Katie Han and Marybeth Sciolino both had two hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Han and Nordan (2-for-3) both doubled.
Hope Rogers went 1-for-4 with two RBIs for the Blue Hose, while Courtney Lawton and Jordan Ashley both had an RBI base hit.
Liberty's Annah Jo Brittingham (5-20) earned the win, allowing three unearned runs on two hits, with three strikeouts and four walks in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Alyssa DiMartino pitched the final 2 1/3 frames, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out one.
Kensley Loudermelk fell to 3-7 with the loss, yielding five runs on five hits, walking one and fanning three in three innings. Natasha Sherrod gave up two runs on four hits in one inning of work, while Sydney Seigler tossed three innings of shutout, two-hit relief.
Kelby Allen doubled with two outs in the top of the first, giving Liberty a runner in scoring position. Hanna Nichols then flied out to left center, ending the at bat.
The Lady Flames struck first, scoring three runs during the top of the second inning, Han walked to lead off, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sciolino hit an infield single, and Crisp followed with a three-run home run to right center.
For the second inning in a row, Brittingham struck out a batter and allowed one single during the bottom of the second while keeping the Blue Hose off the scoreboard.
Brittingham walked Erin Ruff and Jill McLean with two outs in the top of the third, before Rogers flied out to left to quell the rally.
Liberty doubled its lead during the fourth stanza. Han hit a leadoff double in the fourth inning, and Lawrence followed by singling to center. Sciolino greeted reliever Sherrod with a single to left, and advanced to third as both runners scored on the play. Crisp plated Sciolino, making it 6-0 with an RBI groundout. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Katie Zavodny stole second. Megan Robinson flied out to right, ending the at bat.
Brittingham retired the Blue Hose in order in the fourth, keeping the shutout intact.
Allen led off the fifth with a double to left, and Nichols followed with a single. Seigler then came on in relief of Sherrod. Han hit an RBI groundout for Liberty's seventh run. Blair Lawrence singled on the infield, and a Crisp lineout brought the rally to a close.
The Blue Hose chipped away at the deficit in bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners and two outs, Taylor scored on a throwing error. DiMartino then relieved Brittingham, and Rogers hit a two-run single to draw PC to within 7-3. Petik grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Nordan hit a leadoff double during Liberty's sixth time at bat, before three ensuing popouts kept the score at 7-3.
PC cut Liberty's lead in half with a two-out, sixth-inning rally. Kersten Legacki led off with a single, and scored when Ashley singled with two outs. Lawton hit a run-scoring double, producing a 7-5 score. Ruff grounded out, stranding Lawton.
DiMartino closed the door on PC's comeback attempt, pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the win.
Liberty has concluded its 2014 regular-season schedule, and will await seeding for the 2014 Big South Softball Championship, which will be hosted by Coastal Carolina, May 8-11. Seeding will be announced next Sunday evening, after the conclusion of that day's conference games.
