Lady Flames Close Out Regular Season at Presbyterian College This Weekend

The Liberty softball team brings its 2014 regular-season slate to a close this weekend in Clinton, S.C. The Lady Flames (8-43, 2-19 Big South) take on Presbyterian College (24-22, 9-11) in a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. before contesting a 1 p.m. game on Sunday. Sunday will be Liberty's seventh game in a span of five days, which started on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Virginia. During the first four games this week, Liberty batted .337, averaging six runs per game.

Liberty holds a 12-7 lead in the all-time series, with the Lady Flames sweeping PC, 3-0, in Lynchburg, March 23-24, 2013. That series saw one nine-inning game, and the total margin of victory for the Lady Flames was four runs.

Lady Flames at a Glance
Liberty closed out the 21-year history of Liberty Softball Field by splitting a doubleheader with ETSU, Thursday. The Lady Flames won game one, 13-4, hitting three homers, including two by junior Jamie Crisp, before Liberty fell, 13-7, in the nightcap.

Katie Zavodny hits .353 with 35 runs scored and 27 stolen bases. Zavodny moved into fourth place all-time at Liberty in career hits, with hit No. 207 on Thursday. Megan Robinson (.308) leads the team with eight doubles and eight home runs, while Hanna Nichols bats .304. Kelby Allen (.278) has hit seven doubles and six homers, totaling 27 RBIs, while Blair Lawrence (.250) has 16 steals.

Senior RHP Alyssa DiMartino posted her team-best fourth win of the season on Wednesday against ETSU, while Annah Jo Brittingham leads with 68 strikeouts.

Liberty vs. Presbyterian College (Liberty leads series, 12-7, winning last three in a row)

Presbyterian College (24-22, 9-11) split a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. The Blue Hose are 10-5 at home this season. Jill McLean hits .357 with a team-high 38 runs, while Hope Rogers (.326) has eight homers and 31 RBIs. Shelby Petik (.304) leads the team with 11 doubles, while Kersten Legacki (.294) has collected a team-best 32 RBIs. Natasha Sherrod is 6-1 with a 2.37 ERA, while Sydney Seigler (11-11) has a 3.72 ERA. Kensley Loudermelk (2-6) was named Big South Pitcher of the Week, Monday.

Liberty leads the all-time series against Presbyterian College, 12-7, with the Lady Flames sweeping the season series in 2013. The Lady Flames won four out of the first five meetings with the Blue Hose, including a three-game sweep in 2009. These two teams have split two meetings in the Big South Softball Championship all-time.

Liberty vs. Presbyterian College - 2013 Recap
Last season, Liberty swept Presbyterian College at Liberty Softball Field, with the three games being decided by a total of four runs.

Liberty won its conference home opener, 5-4, in nine innings over PC on March 23, with Hanna Nichols providing the game-winning, walk-off hit.

The Lady Flames then beat the Blue Hose, 2-1, in game two. Amber Donovan hit a two-run homer, while Annah Jo Brittingham pitched a complete-game five-hitter.

Liberty completed the sweep on March 24 by scoring four runs in the fifth inning to win, 8-6. Nichols capped the Lady Flames' fifth-inning rally by hitting a two-run home run.

PC Connection
Current Liberty assistant coach Paige Cassady pitched at Presbyterian College in 2007 and 2008. As a freshman in 2007, Cassady won 16 games with a 2.18 ERA and 165 strikeouts and was named to the All-SAC second team. Following the 2008 season, she transferred to FIU, where she was a team captain in 2010.

Out With a Bang
Liberty softball is 10-10 in regular-season finales since 1994. The Lady Flames had won their final regular-season contest during five straight seasons prior to falling to Virginia Tech, 4-2, April 30, 2013. In 2012, Liberty closed out the regular season with a 14-6 win over Longwood, as Kelby Allen hit two home runs during the Lady Flames' victory.

Quick Conference Report
The Lady Flames wrap up conference play this week at Presbyterian College.

Katie Zavodny bats .362 with a team-high nine steals and 13 runs scored during conference play.  Megan Robinson (.317) leads the team in doubles (7), homers (4), RBIs (13) and slugging percentage (.619). Marybeth Sciolino (.281) has stolen four bases, while Hanna Nichols hits .281. Blair Lawrence (.275) has stolen eight bases in league play. Kelby Allen has three homers, 12 RBIs and 12 runs scored against Big South opponents.

Week to Date
The Lady Flames have gone 1-3 so far this week, falling twice at Virginia on Wednesday before splitting a home doubleheader with ETSU, Thursday. Liberty has batted .337 as a team during that span, scoring six runs per game.

During Wednesday's second game at Virginia, Liberty fell, 13-3, despite three Lady Flames (Kelby Allen, Jamie Crisp and Katie Zavodny) recording two hits apiece.

The Lady Flames then downed ETSU, 13-4, on Thursday at Liberty Softball Field, totaling three home runs. Crisp went 3-for-3 with the first two homers of her career, scored three runs and drove in five. Allen, Zavodny and Megan Robinson all had two hits, while Katie Han hit a three-run home run. Alyssa DiMartino picked up the pitching victory in what proved to be Liberty's final win at home this season.

During the final game at Liberty Softball Field, ETSU downed Liberty, 13-7. Robinson went 2-for-2 with a double, home run and two RBIs, while Hanna Nichols homered as well.

Crisp Contributes in a Big Way
Since being inserted into the starting lineup in right field during game two at Virginia, Jamie Crisp has gone 6-for-8 with a double, two home runs and five RBIs. She recorded base hits in each of her first six at bats on the week.

Crisp went 3-for-3 with two homers, three runs and five RBIs on Thursday against ETSU. She is the first Lady Flame to post all of those numbers in the same game since Jessica Moore recorded three hits (3-for-5), three runs, two home runs and five RBIs in a 9-4 win over Princeton, March 2, 2007 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Double Plays Abound
The Lady Flames set a new program single-game record by turning three double plays on Wednesday at Virginia, with twin killings in the second (1-4-3), third (1-6-3) and fourth (5-3) innings.

On Thursday, Liberty turned a rare 7-6-4 double play during game one against ETSU, as Blair Lawrence robbed a home run, and then caught a runner at second.

Notable Streaks
Three of Liberty's top batters are on extended hitting streaks at present, while the Lady Flames' offense as a whole is heating up.

Megan Robinson is batting .478 (11-for-23) during her current seven-game hitting streak. During that same span, seven Lady Flames hit .300 or better, including four (Robinson, Katie Han (.467), Katie Zavodny (.458) and Jamie Crisp (.500)) at .400 or higher.

Zavodny and Hanna Nichols have both registered hits in the last six games in a row, with Zavodny batting .500 and Nichols hitting .333 in that time.

Lady Flames' Season-High 16 Hits Fuel 10-3 Win Over Winthrop
On April 18 at Liberty Softball Field, Liberty won game two of a doubleheader, 10-3 over Winthrop, while recording a season-high 16 base hits. With the win, the Lady Flames snapped a 12-game winless streak.

Three different Lady Flames had three hits, in Katie Han, Megan Robinson and Katie Zavodny. Zavodny hit her third homer of the season, while Kelby Allen and Holly Seiz both went 2-for-4 and scored twice.
