Lady Flames Power Their Way to 13-4 Win Over ETSU
On the strength of three home runs, including two by junior Jamie Crisp, Liberty posted a 13-4 victory in five innings over the visiting ETSU Buccaneers, during game one of a doubleheader, Thursday at Liberty Softball Field.
The Lady Flames improve to 8-42 on the campaign, while the Buccaneers now hold an 18-27 mark.
Crisp went 3-for-3, hitting her first two career home runs while driving in five runs and scoring three times. She is the first Lady Flame to hit two homers in a game this season, and her five RBIs are the most by a Liberty player in 2014.
Katie Zavodny, Megan Robinson and Kelby Allen all registered two hits, with Allen scoring two runs. Katie Han went 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs, while Blair Lawrence (1-for-3) doubled and drove in two runs.
ETSU's Taylor Carter batted 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, while Jackie Baird went 1-for-2, hitting a solo home run. Three additional Buccaneers added one hit apiece.
Alyssa DiMartino (4-18) picked up the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits in four innings of work. Anna Jo Brittingham pitched one hitless inning of relief.
Whitney Leon (2-8) drew the loss, giving up six runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings as the starting pitcher, while Katie Wolff yielded seven runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
ETSU scored first, tallying twice during the top of the second. The Buccaneers loaded the bases with nobody out, before Jackie Boyd and Samantha Carpenter recorded back-to-back sacrifice flies for a 2-0 lead. Nicole Fox grounded out for the third out.
Liberty matched the Buccaneers' total with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Han walked, and went to second on a sacrifice by Sammi Shivock. Crisp then lined a two-run blast to center, tying the game at 2-2.
Baird gave the lead back to ETSU with a two-out solo shot to left in the top of the third. Knoetze grounded out the shortstop, ending the Buccaneers' at bat.
ETSU's lead was short-lived, as the Lady Flames struck for four runs during their ensuing time up. Allen hit a leadoff single, and Hanna Nichols followed with a walk. After two outs, Shivock hit an RBI single to tie the game, and Crisp followed with her second homer of the game, this one a three-run longball which put Liberty ahead, 6-3. Wolff then came on to get the third out.
The visitors received a leadoff double from Carter in the fourth. With one out, Lawrence robbed Boyd with a great leaping catch at the fence, and threw out the runner at second, good for an inning-ending double play.
Liberty tacked on seven runs during the bottom of the fourth, putting the game out of reach. Lawrence hit a two-run double with the bases loaded and one out. Han followed by launching a homer to center, plating three more Lady Flames for an 11-3 advantage. After Shivock walked and Crisp singled, Zavodny and Robinson hit consecutive RBI singles, boosting the lead to 10, 13-3.
ETSU scored an unearned run in the fifth inning, but the Buccaneers were unable to extend the game, leaving two runners on base as the game ended, 13-4 in Liberty's favor after five innings.
