On a perfect sunny day in Lynchburg, the Liberty football squad completed their fourth spring practice and second in full pads, on Friday afternoon at scenic Williams Stadium.

"I am encouraged with how we played a little faster and more physical with our pads," said head coach Danny Rocco.

On offense the Flames worked two different schemes. The first was working on a number of different reverses to a number of different ball carriers. The second scheme is the installation of a slip screen to the running backs with the purpose of creating big plays. "Last year we got into a good mode of running the football and now we want to create ways of getting bigger chunks of yardage," stated Rocco. "We believe these reverses and H-back slip screens will allow us to do that."

Running backs Rashad Jennings and Zach Terrell each broke 60 plus yard touch down runs when these screens were tested against the Flames' defense at the end of practice.

The defense worked on an alternate front. "We are a 3-4 team, but we do play some four down lineman schemes," said Rocco. The Flames worked on a tilt package and zone pressure.

"We had a good practice on both sides of the ball," commented Rocco. "Everyone is practice hard today, everyone was more physical. Tomorrow is a big day to be able to go back-to-back days so we need to put it together in the morning. We are pretty nicked up at various positions, especially wide receiver. We are very thin at that position and we need to get healthy there as the spring continues to get the looks we need."

Today's highlight players on offense were running backs Terrell and Jennings. On defense the standouts named by Rocco were defensive lineman Kevin Richards and Steve Ackley.

The Flames return to the FieldTurf at Williams Stadium on Saturday morning. The spring season's fifth practice is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. and should conclude around 1 p.m.
