Golf Set To Wrap Up Regular Season at Ohio State
Fresh off a pair of match play wins on Saturday, the Liberty Flames will head to Columbus, Ohio, to finish off their regular season schedule at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday.
Liberty, who is currently ranked No. 36 in the country by Golfstat and No. 37 by Golfweek, will be one of 15 teams in the field at this year's Ohio State-hosted event.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be contested at The Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course (par 71, 7,455 yards).
The tournament was first played in 1969 and six of the 15 teams in the field have previously walked away as tournament championship (Ohio State – 23 times; Kent State – five times; Northwestern – four times; Miami (OH), UNLV and Eastern Michigan – one time).
No. 31/31 Kent State enters as the tournament's defending champion, winning by one stroke over SMU in 2012 with a 46-over par 898. The event was not contested in 2013.
Liberty is one of five top 40 teams in the tournament field. Georgia Tech is the top ranked team at No. 5/3, followed by No. 18/18 UAB, No. 34/29 UNLV and No. 31/31 Kent State.
The Flames are coming off a pair of match play wins at their own Liberty University Match Play Invitational last weekend at Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst, Va.
During the morning rounds, Liberty defeated George Mason, 5&1, before upending James Madison, 4&2, during the afternoon flight.
Niklas Lindstrom led the Flames at the event with a pair of individual victories and was honored for his efforts by being named this week's Big South Men's Golfer of the Week. It was the second time this year and the sixth time the senior has been named the conference's top weekly golfer during his four-year playing career.
Lindstrom currently ranks second on Liberty's roster with a 73.00 stroke average and leads the team with 12 rounds of golf at par or better this season. He is Liberty's top ranked individual golfer at No. 102 according to the latest Golfstat rankings.
Fellow senior Chase Marinell, who is ranked No. 142 by Golfstat, leads the team on the year with a 72.85 stroke average.
The final Golfstat top 175 ranked golfer on Liberty's roster is Mathieu Fenasse. The junior is currently ranked No. 152 and ranks third on the team with a 73.17 stroke average.
The 15-team field will play 36 holes at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The final round will commence at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday off holes No. 1 and 10. Golfstat.com will provide live hole-by-hole scoring throughout the weekend event.
