Lady Flames Close Out Big South Play with Shutout of Longwood
The Liberty women's tennis team concluded the Big South Conference portion of its schedule on Wednesday afternoon, blanking the Longwood Lancers, 7-0, at Lancer Courts.
The win, the Lady Flames second shutout in a row and second conference shutout of the season, improves Liberty's record to 13-8 overall and 7-2 in Big South matches. The seven conference wins is a new program record, eclipsing the old mark of six, which was set in three different seasons (2009, 2011, 2013). Longwood's record drops to 3-10 on the season and 1-8 in league play.
Liberty began the afternoon with a pair of convincing wins in doubles play. At No. 3, Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong won their eighth contest in a row to improve to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in Big South matches with an 8-2 defeat of Longwood's Mason Thomas and Bethany Law.
The Lady Flames' Brittany Yang and Belen Rivera quickly followed with an 8-2 win of their own, knocking off Anna Pelak and Paloma Alatorre in the No. 2 position. The victory upped the Liberty duo's record to 10-4 on the season.
In singles play, Liberty head coach Jeff Maren made some adjustments to his lineup, inserting Annisha Domenech and Lauren Mabe into the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. The move paid dividends as both players posted wins. Domenech ousted Thomas by identical 6-4, 6-4 scores, while Mabe delivered the clinching point of the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Law.
The Lady Flames tallied straight-set wins in each of the top four singles tilts. At No. 1, Rivera bounced Allgurin, 6-1, 6-2, giving the sophomore 12 wins on the year.
In the No. 2 spot, Jenkins recorded her fourth consecutive victory by downing Alatorre, 6-2, 6-4. Mariely Hassey also notched her fourth straight win after knocking off Moomau, 6-3, 6-2.
Nicola Wellman tallied her team-leading 13th win of the season with a victory in the No. 4 position. The junior made quick work of Pelak, winning 6-1, 6-2.
"We started slow in doubles, but made up for it with good starts in singles," commented Maren. "I was very proud of Annisha (Domenech) and Lauren (Mabe) stepping up in singles today."
The Lady Flames finish up the regular season on Friday with a home match against Richmond. Prior to the 2 p.m. start, Liberty will honor its three seniors, Domenech, Jenkins and Richard, as part of Senior Day activities.
