Lady Flames' Edwards Selected To 2006 VaSID All-State Women's Soccer First Team; Oberlin Named to Second Team
Included to the all-state team for the first time, Edwards and Oberlin become the Lady Flames' 11th and 12th players in the history of the program to earn VaSID all-state distinction.
Edwards (Jr., Waxhaw, N.C.) was named to the 2006 Big South All-Conference first team after her best season as a Lady Flame this past year. A key reserve early in the season, Liberty went 7-3-2 after her addition to the Lady Flames' starting line-up. She helped stabilize the defense, as Liberty posted a 0.79 goals-against-average and six shutouts in her 12 starts. Overall, Edwards was a key component of the Lady Flames' defense, which had a 1.07 goals-against-average, the second lowest in school history, and recorded eight shutouts.
Oberlin (So., Ada, Mich.) tied for the team lead in scoring this past season and was selected to the 2006 Big South All-Conference first team. Oberlin had five goals and three assists on the year for 13 points, topping her freshman season point total of 11. She was one of three Liberty players with a multiple-goal game, as she had a pair of goals in a win over Charleston Southern.
William & Mary sophomore forward Claire Zimmeck and head coach John Daly were named the 2006 VaSID All-State University Division Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, while James Madison freshman midfielder Corky Julien was selected Rookie of the Year.
