Trey Lambert pitched his second consecutive shutout, Friday.

Liberty right-hander Trey Lambert pitched his second-straight shutout and designated hitter Becker Sankey drove in three runs with two two-out base hits, propelling the Flames to a 5-0 win over the VMI Keydets, Friday night in a Big South Conference game at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

Lambert, the Big South leader in wins, moves to 7-1 on the season. The senior gave up six hits, striking out five batters and walking one. He allowed only one VMI runner to reach third base during the contest, which was played before a stadium record 2,792 crowd.

Last Friday, the right-hander pitched a one-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory at Presbyterian College. He has not allowed a run over his last 22 1/3 innings of work.

Sankey drove in three runs with two two-out hits, one a double. The designated hitter's three RBIs are a career-high.

Liberty moves to 9-1 in Big South play and 23-8 overall. The Flames have won nine out of their last 10 contests. Liberty's 9-1 conference start matches the 1998 Flames' squad for the best Big South start in program history. VMI falls to 6-4 in conference play and 16-11 overall.

The Flames jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. With one out, center fielder Ashton Perritt reached on an infield single and moved to second base on a single by right fielder Will Shepherd. Third baseman Dylan Allen then walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Sankey singled through the left side of the infield, plating Perritt and Shepherd for a 2-0 lead.

Liberty added a run during the fifth. Perritt opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by Shepherd. Second baseman Ryan Seiz followed with a bloop single into left field for a 3-0 advantage.

The Flames struck for an additional run in the sixth. With one out, shortstop Dalton Britt lined a triple into the right field corner and scored on a ground out by left fielder Andrew Yayck.

Liberty plated a run for the third straight inning in the seventh. Shepherd led off the frame with a ground rule double over the right field fence. Three batters later, Sankey lined a two-out double down the right field line, driving in Shepherd for the final score of 5-0.

VMI starter Reed Garrett falls to 4-3 on the year. The right-hander allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings. He struck out five batters and walked one.

The Flames collected 10 hits in the contest. Shepherd, who was Liberty's leadoff hitter for the third time this season, went 4-for-4 and scored two runs. The right-fielder's four hits are a career-high.

Liberty and VMI will meet in the middle game of their three-game Big South series tomorrow.  First pitch at Liberty Baseball Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
