Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Announcement
USA Softball National Team
Lynchburg softball fans will get an opportunity to see the 2014 USA Softball Women's National Team in person this June, as announced today at a press conference at Lynchburg City Stadium.
Speakers at the press conference included: Lynchburg Mayor Michael Gillette, Parks and Recreation Director Kay Frazier, USA Softball Olympic Gold Medalist and Liberty first-year head coach Dot Richardson and Commissioner of Piedmont Virginia ASA Andy Dooley.
Richardson will field a team of collegiate and post-collegiate student-athletes this summer, the Central Virginia All-Stars. She will coach this team in a two-game exhibition doubleheader against Team USA on June 13 at City Stadium in Lynchburg, with game one beginning at 7 p.m.
The Lynchburg Hillcats will handle ticketing for the doubleheader. Tickets go on sale today at Noon, and can be purchased at Lynchburg City Stadium ticket office or online at Lynchburg-Hillcats.com.
A total of 24 athletes will participate in Team USA's selection camp this June, with the games and practices in Lynchburg serving as part of the team's selection process. On June 22, the final roster of 17 players will be announced, a team that will participate in the 2014 World Cup of Softball in Irvine, Calif., and 2014 ISF World Championships in Haarlem, Netherlands.
Richardson, a softball legend, was a standout for the USA Softball Women's Softball National Team. She helped Team USA win two Olympic Gold medals, along with Gold at five Pan American Games and four World Championships. Among her many honors, Richardson is enshrined in the ASA Softball Hall of Fame and UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
While in town preparing for the event, Team USA is scheduled to practice at Liberty's new softball stadium, which remains under construction. Due to ongoing construction at the site, practices are currently set to be closed to the public. The new stadium is on target to be fully ready for the 2015 softball season.
