Spring Practice Update with Marshall Roberts
LibertyFlames.com continues its coverage of spring practice today with LFSN reporter Alan York visiting with Flames' cornerbacks coach Marshall Roberts.
Roberts is the senior member of Liberty's football coaching staff, having been with the program with more than a decade (joined staff in 2004).
Currently, Roberts is charged with overseeing Liberty's cornerbacks, a group that lost two all-conference seniors to graduation last year. Walt Aikens, who participated in the Medal of Honor and Senior Bowl during the offseason, tied for team-high tackling honors in 2013 with 62 stops. He finished his three-year career at Liberty with 162 career tackles, 13 career pass breakups and seven career interceptions.
Opposite Aikens' boundary cornerback position for the last three year was fellow graduating senior Kevin Fogg at field cornerback. The All-American return specialist completed his days on Liberty Mountain with 48 career games played, 150 career tackles, 17 career pass breakups, nine career interceptions, four career fumble recoveries and three career forced fumbles.
The leading candidates to fill those roles in 2014 will be rising senior Kenny Scott (field corner) and rising sophomore Wesley Scott (boundary corner). Kenny Scott ranked fifth on Liberty's roster with 45 tackles in 2013, while Wesley Scott was Liberty's leading freshman tackler with 33 tackles.
On the practice field, the Flames held their first practice of the week yesterday afternoon under ideal practice conditions (mostly clear skies and mid 70s). Liberty returns to the practice field tomorrow afternoon before holding a closed scrimmage on Saturday.
Later this week, LibertyFlames.com will continue its coverage of the Flames' spring practice workouts when York interviewing Liberty's offensive coordinator Aaron Stamn and senior safety Jacob Hagen.
