Chase Marinell leads the Flames after 36 holes of play at the Linger Longer Invitational as he is tied for 10th place.

Liberty opened play strong at the Linger Longer Invitational, but fell down the leaderboard during the closing holes to a share of sixth place after 36 holes of play on Saturday.

Liberty, currently ranked No. 41 in the country by Golfstat and No. 39 by Golfweek, kept pace with the leaders during round one of play. The Flames carded a seven-under par 281 on the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Planation.

The team tally tied Liberty's best team 18-hole score of the 2013-14 season and marked the Flames' first sub-par round of the spring.

After the morning flight, Liberty found itself in a share of fifth place and remained in that position until the Flames slipped into a share of sixth place after finishing a combined seven-over par during the team's last five holes of play.

Two-time defending event champion Alabama, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the country in both golf polls, rallied late to finish the first day of action in a share of first place with No. 5/5 Georgia.

No. 15/13 Oklahoma was the team leader after opening the day with a 17-under par 271. However, the Sooners could not keep pace during the afternoon, carding a seven-over par 295 to fall into fourth place with a 10-under par 566.

Georgia carded matching rounds of 10-under par 278 and shares the overall lead with Alabama (281-275) with a 20-under par 556.

Tournament co-host No. 33/36 Mercer is in third place with an 11-under par 565 (278-287) and fellow event co-host No. 37/37 Kennesaw State is in fifth place with a five-under par 571 (287-284).

The Flames (281-291) currently share sixth place with No 26/22 Clemson (286-286) and Chattanooga (283-289) with all three teams circling the Jack Nicklaus designed course twice to post a four-under par 572.

A total of 28 players in the 84-man field currently have under-par scores, paced by Alabama's Robby Shelton, who leads the field with a nine-under par 135 (69-66).

Three of Liberty's five starters are among those in red figures, led by Chase Marinell, who is tied for 10th place overall with a four-under par 140 (68-72).

The senior opened with his second under-par round of the spring, thanks to five birdies and one bogey, during the morning flight. His second time around the course, Marinell slipped with a double bogey on his second-to-last hole, but got one of the strokes back on his final hole with his eight birdie on the day.

Mathieu Fenasse trails his teammate by two strokes and shares 18th place with a two-under par 142 (71-71). The junior struggled out of the gates on Saturday morning with two early bogeys, but managed to spread seven birdies and three additional bogeys over his final 34 holes of play.

Niklas Lindstrom was one of 15 players to post sub-70 rounds of golf during the morning flight, carding a four-under par 68 thanks to five birdies and one bogey. However, he fell down the leaderboard to a share of 25th place with an overall one-under par 143 (68-75) after carding three bogeys, two birdies and a double bogey during his second round.

Harrison Winger (77-73-150/+6) and Ian McConnell (74-79-153/+9) are Liberty's final two golfers in the field where they stand in 56th and 66th place, respectively.

The Flames will return to the Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Planation tomorrow morning for the final round of the 2014 Linger Longer Invitational. Liberty will be paired up with golfers from Chattanooga, Clemson and Kennesaw State and will be sent of holes 5, 6, 7 and 8 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
