Campbell Posts 8-4 Victory Over Lady Flames

Hanna Nichols hit her second homer of the season, on Saturday against Campbell.

Trailing 3-1 entering the fourth inning, visiting Campbell scored seven runs in the final four stanzas, securing a series sweep with an 8-4 victory over Liberty, Saturday.

  Campbell advances it record to 17-13, with a 3-0 record in conference play, while the Lady Flames fall to 2-21, 0-3 in Big South games following their 16th consecutive setback.

Olivia Scaborough went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Milly Martinet (2-for-2) and Courtney Klinger both went deep as well. Jordan Clarke batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

For Liberty, Katie Zavodny batted 2-for-4, while Megan Robinson and Hanna Nichols hit one home run apiece, and Robinson scored two runs. Kelby Allen and Grace Nordan both doubled.

Campbell's Courtney Roberts (5-4) earned the victory, yielding one run on three hits in two innings of relief work. Katie Baker pitched one-hit ball for the final two innings, picking up her first save. Starter Julia Callicutt gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits in three innings, striking out five.

Liberty reliever Alyssa DiMartino (1-9) drew the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Annah Jo Brittingham pitched 5 2/3 innings total, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits while striking out four and walking three.

Campbell opened the scoring by manufacturing a run in the top of the first. Nesbitt drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Following a groundout and a hit batter, Martinet drove Nesbitt in with a sacrifice fly.

Liberty bounced back quickly, with two tallies in the bottom half of the first. Robinson reached on an error, and scored when Allen ripped a double to center. Shivock then plated Allen with a single up the middle, making it 2-1, Lady Flames. Callicutt got out of the inning without any further baserunners.

Campbell went in order during the second and third innings, allowing Liberty to add to its lead. Megan Robinson hit a solo shot, her third homer of the campaign, in the bottom of the third, extending the Lady Flames' lead to 3-1.

Martinet homered to lead off the fourth, good for Campbell's first hit of the day. After Scarborough singled, DiMartino entered the game in relief of Brittingham. With runners on second and third and two outs, Clarke gave the Camels a 4-3 lead with a two-run single.

The Lady Flames battled back into a tie in the fourth, as Nichols roped a homer to left off of Roberts for a 4-4 score. Nordan doubled, but was left on when Jamie Crisp grounded out.

The Camels regained their lead, 5-4, when Klingler hit an opposite-field round tripper with one out in the fifth. After a Martinet single, Brittingham re-entered the circle to get the last two outs.

Zavodny bunted for a base hit, and an ensuing error put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but an infield fly and fielder's choice brought the inning to a close.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Campbell scored three insurance runs on a three-run blast by Scarborough in the top of the seventh. Baker then worked around a Zavodny single in the bottom of the inning, securing the 8-4 win to pick up the save.

The Lady Flames return to the road for a midweek conference series, taking on defending Big South champion Longwood on Tuesday and Wednesday in Farmville, Va. The first game of Tuesday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m., while the teams will then contest a single game on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
