Liberty Opens Conference Play in Grand Fashion
The Liberty Flames opened Big South Conference play with a 17-1 win over the Campbell Fighting Camels, extending their win streak to seven games, Friday afternoon at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
Left fielder Nick Lacik went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and third baseman Dylan Allen went 3-for-3, posting the first three-hit game of his career, driving in three runs and scoring three runs in the Liberty victory. Second baseman Ryan Seiz added his fourth home run of the year and drove in four runs for the Flames.
With the win, Liberty runs its record to 13-6 on the year and 1-0 in Big South action. In addition to seven-straight wins, the Flames have won 10 out of their last 11 contests. Campbell drops to 13-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Camels entered the contest having won six out of their last eight games.
Liberty jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second. With one out, three consecutive singles led to the Flames' first run. First baseman Alex Close and catcher Danny Grauer hit back-to-back singles and when Campbell center fielder Matt Nadolski misplayed a single by Allen, Close came around to score for a 1-0 edge. Two batters later, Lacik ripped a bases-loaded single back through the middle of the diamond, plating two more runs for a three-run lead.
In the fourth, Liberty sent 16 men to plate and scored a season-high 10 runs on seven hits. Perritt, Lacik and right fielder Will Shepherd singled to open the inning and Seiz walked to force in a run for a 5-0 lead. Two batters later, shortstop Dalton Britt brought home two more runs with a single for a 7-0 advantage.
Close then singled to load the bases and Grauer plated another run with a RBI groundout for an 8-0 advantage. Allen followed with a two-run single, upping the Liberty lead to 9-0. After Lacik was hit by a pitch to the load the bases, the Flames scored four straight runs on three walks and a hit batter for a 13-0 lead.
Liberty added to its lead on a two-run single by Lacik and a two-run home run over the center field wall by Seiz in the fifth.
In the eighth, Campbell scored on a grounder by Aaron Vogt with runners on second and third and one out for the final of 17-1.
Liberty right-hander Trey Lambert moved to 4-1 on the year. He allowed two hits over the first six innings. The senior struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Campbell starting pitcher Heath Bowers falls to 4-1 on the season. He gave up 10 runs on 13 hits over 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five batters and walked one.
Liberty collected 18 hits in posting a season-high 17 runs. Britt added two hits and three RBIs for the Flames in the win. Campbell managed five hits off of four Liberty pitchers.
Due to forecasted inclement weather for Lynchburg on Sunday, Liberty and Campbell will meet in a doubleheader at Liberty Baseball Stadium, tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
