No. 19/13 Oklahoma Downs Liberty, 18-3
Liberty took a 3-0 lead over defending national champion Oklahoma on Friday, before the No. 19/13 Sooners scored 18 unanswered runs on the way to an 18-3 victory, at Marita Hynes Stadium.
The Sooners improve to 15-6 on the campaign, including 5-1 at home. The Lady Flames are now 2-17, after sustaining a pair of defeats on Friday at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament in Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma's top three hitters, Erin Miller, Lauren Chamberlain and Shelby Pendley, each recorded three hits while combining to hit five home runs and drive in 10 runs. Chamberlain and Pendley hit two home runs apiece, while Whitney Ellis hit 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
Katie Zavodny batted 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored for the Lady Flames, while Blair Lawrence also singled and scored. Kelby Allen hit a three-run homer, her second round tripper of the season.
Leslie Miller (3-0) earned the victory, with two innings of one-hit ball, as she relieved starter Georgia Casey. Taylor Dewbery pitched the final inning, a 1-2-3 fifth frame.
Alyssa DiMartino (1-7) drew the loss, allowing nine runs (five earned) on nine hits in two innings pitched. Annah Jo Brittingham yielded eight earned runs on 10 hits in two innings of work.
The Lady Flames jumped ahead with a big first inning. Zavodny and Lawrence both singled, and Allen followed with a three-run blast deep over the left-center field wall. Casey then hit Sammi Shivock, who stole second. Georgia Casey escaped further damage by striking out Nichols, but not before Liberty took a 3-0 lead.
Oklahoma responded in the bottom of the first, as the first seven batters reached base. Chamberlain broke the ice with a two-run homer. Casey Ellis and Destinee Martinez followed with consecutive RBI base hits, making it 4-3, Sooners, before DiMartino got Miller to line out with the bases loaded for the third out.
The Sooners plated a pair during the second inning off of relief pitcher Brittingham. Chamberlain drew a leadoff walk, and scored on a single by Ellis. After a Martinez single, Callie Parsons walked with the bases loaded, good for a 6-3 Oklahoma advantage. Brittingham left the bases filled, with a lineout and groundout.
The hosts added four to their score in the fourth, as Chamberlain (two-run home run) and Pendley recorded back-to-back homers. Casey walked, and scored on an RBI double from Ellis. After two outs, OU loaded the bases, but a popout ended the inning, 10-3, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma finished up its scoring with an eight-run fourth stanza which featured homers by Chamberlain and Paris Townsend. Dewbery then came on to get the final three outs, with a three-batter fifth inning.
Liberty continues its participation at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament tomorrow, with a noon (ET) game against Western Illinois.
