Barr Twins Named to Irish U21 National Team
The Liberty field hockey sister duo of Bethany and Serena Barr were recently named to the Ireland Under-21 National Team, Irish National Coach Darren Smith announced. The Barrs are two of 22 players selected to the squad that will compete internationally this summer.
Training camp for the Irish U21 squad runs June 20-23, after which it will compete in an international series June 27-30. Training camp will commence again on July 4-6 followed by the squad competing in the EuroHockey Junior Championship II in Vienna, Austria on July 13-19.
The Barrs recently competed at the Irish Hockey U21 Interprovincial Tournament. The Lurgan natives helped lead their Ulster squad to a first-place finish in the tournament which ran Feb. 7-9 at Three Rock Rovers.
The NorPac's 2013 Maria Whitehead Rookie of the Year, all-conference and VaSID first-team all-state honoree, Serena Barr posted 27 points on nine goals and nine assists last season. The freshman finished third in the league in points and assists and fourth in goals. Barr helped lead a defensive unit which ranked third in the country in goals-against average (0.95) and 10th in shutouts per game (0.36).
Bethany Barr posted 22 points on five goals and a team and league-best 12 assists during the 2013 campaign. The freshman finished ranked No. 19 in the nation in assists per game (0.55). Barr was tabbed the NorPac Player of the Week once as well as the Rookie of the Week once. The midfielder earned inclusion on the NorPac All-Tournament team after tallying two goals and an assist over the course of the three-day event.
The Barr duo helped lead the Lady Flames to the 2013 NorPac Championship and their first-ever berth in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament. Liberty concluded the season with a 17-5 overall record.
