Lady Flames Seeded No. 2 for BSC Championship
For the third time in program history, Liberty has earned the No. 2 seed for the 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women's Basketball Championship. The two-time defending champion Lady Flames will play the winner of Tuesday's game between No. 7 seed Presbyterian College and No. 10 seed Longwood in the quarterfinal round, Thursday at 6 p.m. inside The HTC Center in Conway, S.C.
Liberty won its final five regular-season contests in a row to finish at 19-10 overall and 15-5 in Big South contests. The Lady Flames tied Winthrop for second place in the conference standings, but were awarded the No. 2 seed by virtue of their two victories over the No. 3 seed Eagles.
Liberty has cut down the nets both times it has been seeded No. 2 previously, including its first-ever Big South Championship title in 1997, as well as 2010.
If the Lady Flames win on Thursday, they would move on to the semifinals Saturday at 8 p.m. The championship game is slated for next Sunday at 5 p.m.
For the second straight year, the entire tournament will be contested inside Coastal Carolina's brand-new The HTC Center, in conjunction with the Big South Men's Basketball Championship.
High Point went 16-4 in conference play to win its first Big South regular-season title since 2007 and the No. 1 seed for next week's tournament. No. 4 seed Campbell (13-7) and No. 5 seed Gardner-Webb (11-9) earned the final two byes to Thursday's quarterfinal round, where they will square off with one another.
Tournament host Coastal Carolina earned the No. 6 seed with a 10-10 Big South ledger, finishing one game ahead of No. 7 seed Presbyterian College (9-11). After going winless in conference play in 2012-13, UNC Asheville went 7-13 this season to get the No. 8 seed.
Radford and Longwood ended up with matching 5-15 Big South marks, but the Highlanders won the tiebreaker for the No. 9 seed. Charleston Southern is seeded No. 11 after going 4-16 in Big South play.
Liberty fans will have several ways to keep up with the action if they are unable to make it to The HTC Center. Thursday's quarterfinal games will be video streamed on the Big South Network. Meanwhile, both the semifinals and championship game will be aired on ESPN3.
