44 Flames Named to BSC Indoor Track All-Decade Teams
A conference-high 43 Liberty student-athletes and head coach Brant Tolsma have been named to the Big South Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field All-Decade teams. Part of the Big South's 30th anniversary celebration, the all-decade teams were determined by conference administrators and fan voting.
Heather Sagan, who made the 2000s women's all-decade team as a distance runner, headlines the Liberty honorees. She is the Lady Flames' only national champion, taking first place in the women's mile final at the 2002 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Other Liberty indoor All-Americans on the all-decade listings include Brandon Hoskins (2000s men's heptathlete), Josh McDougal (2000s men's distance runner) and Andrea Wildrick (2000s women's jumper).
Tolsma was tabbed the coach of the 1990s and 2000s men's all-decade teams, as well as the 1990s women's all-decade team. During the time period covered by these all-decade squads, Tolsma coached a total of 19 Liberty teams to Big South indoor titles and was a 10-time Big South Coach of the Year.
Three members of Tolsma's current coaching staff appear on the all-decade teams, including McDougal, Pete McFadden (1990s men's sprinter) and Clendon Henderson (2000s men's thrower).
A total of 13 Flames were included on the 1990s men's all-decade team, including Greg Benhase (sprints, jumps), Bryan Cook (jumps), Josh Cox (distance), Stephen Githuka (distance), James Highsmith (throws), Jeremy Howe (distance), Ken Howell (sprints, jumps), James Johnson (jumps, throws), Josh Jones (sprints), Brian Kiprono (distance), McFadden, Chris Poluikis (distance) and Marlon Tanner (sprints).
The 2000s men's all-decade team saw 14 Flames honored, including Nick Anderson (jumps), Anthony Bryant (jumps), Jon Debogory (sprints), Evan Falat (distance), Jon Hart (throws), Henderson, Hoskins, McDougal, Clarence Murray (heptathlon), Matt Parker (sprints, jumps), Dan Rabe (distance), Jeremy Wagner (sprints), Adam Williams (jumps) and Chad Wilson (sprints, jumps).
Seven Lady Flames were voted to the 1990s women's all-decade team, including Holly Deem (sprints), Wendy Heath (sprints, jumps), Jaquay Reid (sprints), Liz Robertson (jumps), Amy Rodriguez (throws), Amy Sturgill (jumps) and Amy Teer (distance).
Rounding out the all-decade squads, nine Liberty student-athletes made the 2000s women's all-decade team, including Kena Butts (jumps), Carol Jefferson (distance), Danielle McNaney (sprints), Kodi Pollard (sprints), Sagan, Jaime Watson (distance), Wildrick, Marie Williams (pentathlon) and Arlene Zelinskas (sprints, pentathlon).
Liberty will attempt to add to its tradition of success at the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday and Saturday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. The men's team will shoot for its 17th straight championship, while the Lady Flames will aim for their fourth title in the last five years.
