Hart, Zelinskas Claim Big South Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week Honors
Hart (Jr., Wyomissing, Pa.) set a pair of Liberty records and a Big South Conference record this past weekend, at Coastal Carolina's Shamrock Invitational. On Friday, he won the hammer throw by nearly 14 feet, with a top mark of 204-7. The distance improved upon his own school record and is the top throw by a Big South performer this year. Hart has already qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the event and is ranked No. 5 nationally.
In addition, Hart took first place in the shot put the following day with a record-setting heave of 57-7.5. The throw set a new Liberty and Big South Conference standard. The previous school record (55-8.5) had been held by Liberty head strength and conditioning coach, Bill Gillespie, since May 1983. Hart has also qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the shot put and ranks No. 7 in the nation.
Zelinskas (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) won her conference award after a busy but successful weekend at the Shamrock Invitational. She had a hand in four victories on Friday and Saturday, including two hurdle events and a pair of relays.
Zelinskas came from behind to top conference rival, LeAuna Sistrunk of Coastal Carolina, in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 14.24. She then went on to win the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:01.79. Zelinskas owns the conference's best marks in both hurdle events and the high jump through the early stages of the season.
The Buckeye State native also contributed to the Lady Flames' winning efforts in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays. Zelinskas finished her weekend with a fifth-place effort in the long jump. Her 18-3 mark puts her third on the Big South Conference performance list.
Hart, Zelinskas and the rest of the Liberty men's and women's track and field teams will travel across town Saturday for the Lynchburg College Invitational. Action at Shellenberger Field will commence at 8 a.m.
