Flames Edged by Redhawks, 4-3
With the score tied at three apiece, the Seattle Redhawks secured a win in the No. 6 singles position to seal a narrow 4-3 victory over the Liberty men's tennis team on Sunday afternoon in a match played at the University of Portland.
The Flames drop their second match in a row to fall to 3-4 on the season. Liberty concludes its five-match road trip with a 1-4 record. Seattle improves its record to 4-7 overall.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after earning wins in two of the three doubles matches. Liberty's top pair of Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero got back on the winning track after losing yesterday, defeating Kevin Lynch and Jason Bediones, 8-4. The No. 19 ranked duo improves to 3-2 on the season.
Seattle notched wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, when Will Topp and Zach Kosanke knocked off Dillon Segur and Egon Samaai, 8-5, and Riley Newman and Connor Leahy outlasted Stan Vaughan and Guillem Secanell in a tight contest, 8-7 (7-5).
The Flames quickly evened the match at one apiece when Thomas rolled past Lynch in the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-1.
Kosanke put the Redhawks back in front with a victory at No. 3. Kosanke edged Azuero in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The see-saw match continued with a victory for the Flames in the No. 2 spot. Samaai improved to a team-best 5-2 in singles tilts with a 6-0, 7-6 (11-9) triumph over Topp, evening the contest at 2-2.
Seattle answered with a win from Ian Clare against Vaughan in the No. 4 slot, 6-3, 6-4.
Segur kept Liberty alive with a hard-fought ousting of Newman at No. 5. The junior upped his record to 2-1 on the season with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory.
The contest was decided when Leahy tripped up Secanell, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 6 position.
The Flames return to the Hill City on Friday for a home matchup with Morgan State. The contest against the Bears is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts.
