UNCW Holds Off Liberty, 3-1
Liberty and UNCW played a tightly-contested game on Sunday, with the host Seahawks edging the Lady Flames, 3-1, at Boseman Field.
With the win, UNCW evens its season record to 3-3, while the Lady Flames are now 2-6 on the campaign. Liberty went 2-1 during this weekend's Seahawk Invitational, downing Norfolk State and UMBC last night.
UNCW scored three runs on four hits, committing one error, while Liberty tallied one run on two hits from the plate and miscues in the field.
Seahawk pitcher Casey Rowland (2-1) pitched a complete-game two-hitter, allowing one run while striking out two and walking four.
Liberty's Alyssa DiMartino (1-2) continued her strong start to the season, yielding three runs, one earned, on four hits. She has allowed just one earned run in 17 innings pitched this year.
Katie Zavodny and Katie Han both singled for the Lady Flames, while Holly Seiz scored Liberty's lone tally.
UNCW's Brittany Gamby went 1-for-2 with one run scored, while Laruen Moore hit an RBI double for the Seahawks.
The Lady Flames placed a pair of runners on base in the top of the first. Blair Lawrence reached on a two-base error, and then went to third on a passed ball. Hanna Nichols drew a two-out walk, and stole second, before Rowland left both runners in scoring position by getting a foul out.
Liberty manufactured a second-inning run, taking a 1-0 lead. Seiz drew a leadoff walk, and a sacrifice bunt and groundout sent her to third with two outs. Rowland's wild pitch allowed Seiz to score, before the left-hander recorded the third out on an infield popout.
UNCW struck twice in the bottom of the second to move ahead. Nella Chamblee hit a leadoff single, and a throwing error put runners on first and second. Merritt Wilkinson lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the score, and then Erin Brown plated Morgan Ayers with a two-out single to center for a 2-1 advantage.
Han broke up Rowland's no-hit bid with two outs in the top of the fourth stanza, before a groundout brought Liberty's time at bat to its conclusion.
DiMartino recorded three straight 1-2-3 innings, setting the Seahawks down in order from the third through fifth to keep the score at 2-1, UNCW.
A four-pitch walk to Kelby Allen started the sixth, and Nichols moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. A Grace Nordan groundout sent Allen to third with two down. Seiz then grounded to second for the third out.
The Seahawks added an insurance run in the sixth frame. Gamby hit a bunt single, and scored on a double by Moore, making it 3-1 before Moore was erased trying to stretch it to a triple.
Rowland retired the Lady Flames in order during the seventh, capping the 3-1 win for the Seahawks.
The Lady Flames will next compete in the Spartan Classic, hosted by USC Upstate next Friday through Sunday in Spartanburg, S.C. Liberty will open the tournament against Furman on Friday at 5 p.m., and will also meet Western Carolina and USC Upstate on the weekend.
