Rebekah Jenkins collected a straight-set win in the No. 1 position.

The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team halted its two-match losing skid with a resounding 6-0 shutout win against the George Washington Colonials on Friday afternoon.

"Adversity has become our friend recently," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "Despite fighting snow and delays, we were still able to play at a high level against a good team. Rebekah (Jenkins) played outstanding tennis at No. 1 to lead the way for us. I couldn't be more proud of how our team is progressing."

The victory improved the Lady Flames to 4-2 overall and 3-0 all-time against GW. The Colonials fall to 0-3 on the season.

The snow storm which impacted much of the east forced the teams to play the match at the Hong Tennis Centre in Gaithersburg, Md. Due to court availability, the contest only featured singles matches.

Liberty's Belen Rivera kicked off the action with her fifth singles win of the year, besting Allison Hansen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 3 position. Mariely Hassey quickly followed with a straight-set win of her own, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot versus Grace Egger. The win upped Hassey's record to a perfect 4-0 on the year.

Rebekah Jenkins kept the momentum rolling for the Lady Flames with a win in the No. 1 position. The senior earned her first victory of the season, downing Lana Robins, 6-4, 6-4.

Freshman Maria Khval sealed the win for Liberty after matching Rivera for the team lead with her fifth singles win of the season. Khval ousted Leah Pascarella, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, at No. 2.

Liberty completed the sweep with wins in the final two positions. Brittany Yang defeated Christina Carpenter, 6-4, 6-1, before Nicola Wellman rallied from a one-set deficit to knock off Taylor Nederlander, 5-7, 6-3, 14-12.

After playing its first six matches on the road, Liberty will open its home schedule on Feb. 21 against Morgan Sate. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2:30 at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts.
