MBB Game Day Central: VMI
Liberty returns to action on Saturday, squaring off with Big South North Division co-leader VMI. The Flames took the first meeting this season inside Cameron Hall on Jan. 11, 85-80. The meeting marks the last regular-season matchup between the two squads before the Keydets leave the Big South, with the series tied, 15-15. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., with the contest airing live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network, MASN, ESPN3 and the Big South Network.
What to Watch for
- In the previous meeting between Liberty and VMI, JR Coronado played a huge role in the Flames' win, posting a career-high 20 points while adding 13 rebounds (11 offensive boards). In the nine games since, Coronado has recorded just 40 points (4.4 ppg) and 47 rebounds (5.2 rpg), including 15 offensive boards. Can the senior turn things around in the rematch?
- Another player who has had big games against VMI is Antwan Burrus. The redshirt senior will also look to rebound after a four-point, three-rebound performance against Gardner-Webb.
- While he is fifth overall on the team in scoring this season, Andrew Smith is leading the team offensively in conference play, averaging 12.1 points per game. On Tuesday, Smith finished with 10 points, which included his first career three-pointer.
- Against Gardner-Webb, the Flames lost the rebounding battle for the third time in Big South action, this season. In its last meeting with the Keydets, Liberty outrebounded VMI, 52-31, finishing the contest with a season-high in rebounds and rebounding margin (+21).
