MBB Game Day Central: Gardner-Webb
Liberty looks to end a four-game skid, Tuesday night, when it hosts Gardner-Webb. The Flames lead the all-time series, 8-4, taking seven of the last eight meetings. Dale Layer's squad most recently bested the Runnin' Bulldogs in the semifinals of the 2013 Big South Championship with a narrow 65-62 victory. If history is any indication, the matchup could come down to the wire, with four of the last five contests decided by five points or less. Tipoff for the 13th installment in the series is slated for 7 p.m., with the contest airing live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network, MASN, Comcast Sports South, ESPN3 and the Big South Network.
- While he is fifth overall on the team in scoring this season, Andrew Smith is leading the team offensively in conference play, averaging 12.3 points per game. Smith is coming off his third straight double-double, Saturday, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The junior also had a career-high five steals and four blocks in the contest. Smith's five thefts mark the second time a Liberty player has garnered five steals this season, as Joe Retic did so on Jan. 8 at Radford. Smith's four blocks are also the most by a Liberty, this year.
- John Caleb Sanders will look to bounce back after finishing with just five points against UNC Asheville, Saturday. Sanders has a chance to do just that versus Gardner-Webb, a team he averaged 23.0 ppg against last season, which included a career-high 27-point performance.
- Liberty finished with a season-high 10 steals and nine blocks, Saturday. The Flames' 10 blocks are the most since Liberty recorded 10 against Longwood on Jan. 22, 2013.
- On Saturday, Antwan Burrus received his first start since Jan. 1, finishing with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
