Lady Flames Fall to FGCU, 9-0
The host Florida Gulf Coast Eagles broke open a close game with an eight-run third inning, downing the Liberty Lady Flames, 9-0, Saturday in Fort Myers, Fla.
FGCU runs its season record to 4-0, heading into the third and final day of the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational. The Lady Flames remain in search of their first win, at 0-4, and will have a rematch against Florida Gulf Coast tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Kelsey Carpenter and Brittney Garabedian both went 2-for-2 with a double for FGCU, while Garabedian drove in three runs and Carpenter recorded two RBIs.
For the Lady Flames, Katie Zavodny posted a single and a stolen base, while Cortney Cooper went 1-for-2.
FGCU's Shelby Morgan (1-0) earned the victory, pitching a five-inning, two-hit shutout.
Annah Jo Brittingham fell to 0-2 on the season, allowing five runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Alyssa DiMartino yielded four unearned runs on four hits in the final 1 2/3 innings.
Zavodny singled and stole second to lead off the game, and went to third on a groundout by Lawrence. Seiz scorched a grounder to third with two outs, but Kirsten Bembnowski made a diving stop to keep the Lady Flames off the board.
FGCU scored once during the bottom of the first. Makensie McAvoy and Zgrabik both walked, and Lanier hit a two-out RBI single, driving in McAvoy for a 1-0 Eagles edge.
Brittingham worked around a double by Garabedian, holding FGCU scoreless in the second stanza.
Cooper led off the third with her first career base hit, ripping a single to left. Zavodny got caught stealing after reaching via fielder's choice, and a Blair Lawrence groundout ended the top of the third.
The Eagles put eight runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. A walk to Ross pushed home FGCU's second run, and DiMartino then entered the circle in relief of Brittingham. With two outs, Garabedian hit a bases-clearing double, and a pair of Liberty errors opened the door for four more FGCU tallies, making it 9-0.
After Liberty was unable to push across a run in either the fourth or fifth inning, the game ended due to run rule.
The Lady Flames close out their participation at the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational tomorrow, taking on Florida Gulf Coast at 9 a.m.
