MBB Game Day Central: Winthrop
Liberty returns to action, Tuesday, playing host to Winthrop. The Flames look to get back on the winning track after dropping back-to-back contests. Meanwhile, the Eagles are also in a two-game skid. Dale Layer's squad hopes to pick up its first win against Winthrop since Dec. 4, 2010, when the Flames bested the Eagles in the Vines Center, 75-72. Since then, Winthrop has reeled off four straight wins against the Flames to lead the all-time series, 33-15. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., with the contest airing live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network, MASN and ESPN3.
- Through eight Big South games, Liberty is averaging 38.8 rebounds per game (2nd), while holding opponents to 28.6 rpg for a margin of +10.1. Charleston Southern's 39 boards on Saturday are the most the Flames have allowed against a conference opponent this season.
- Liberty will look to bounce back after finishing with its lowest shooting percentage (.338, 22-of-65) from the field.
- Despite their struggles from the field, the Flames are coming off their best performance at the foul line, shooting 93.8 percent (15-of-16) on Saturday.
- This past Saturday, Andrew Smith paced the Flames in four different statistical categories - points (15), rebounds (13), blocks (three) and steals (two). The feat has happened just one other time this year, when Antwan Burrus finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds, one block and one steal against Hampton.
