Khval Garners Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week Plaudit
Liberty freshman Maria Khval has been selected as the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the first time in her young collegiate career, as announced this afternoon by the league office. Khval's award comes as a result of her performance in Liberty's lone match played between Jan. 20-26.
The Lady Flames have now won a conference award in each of the first two weeks of the season. Last week, Mariely Hassey was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week honoree.
Khval played a key role in the Lady Flames' 6-1 victory over Big 12 opponent West Virginia this past Saturday. The win improved Liberty to 3-0 on the season for the first time in program history.
Khval picked up a win in both singles and doubles play against the Mountaineers. The two victories improved the freshman's record to 3-0 in both singles and doubles action on the season. Khval and partner Rebekah Jenkins clinched the doubles point for Liberty against the Mountaineers with a hard-fought win in the No. 1 position, 7-6 (7), over Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal. The Minsk, Belarus native, followed her doubles win with a come-from-behind victory in the No. 2 singles spot. Khval dropped the first set to Chahal, 6-4, before rallying to win the second and third sets, 6-3, 10-5, respectively.
The Lady Flames will look to extend their program-best start to 4-0 when they compete at No. 55 Kansas State on Saturday at 1 p.m. Liberty will follow that match with a Sunday contest against Kansas.
