MBB Game Day Central: Longwood
The Liberty men's basketball team returns to the hardwood, Wednesday, to square off with fellow Big South North Division foe, Longwood. The Flames are looking for their first-ever win against the Lancers inside Willett Hall, where Longwood has taken all 11 matchups against Liberty. The Lancers are looking for their first conference win, this season, while the Flames are 2-2 in Big South play and hope to bounce back from a 76-70 defeat at home against High Point.
More Than Just Dunks
Since the beginning of conference play, Andrew Smith is leading the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 ppg. Despite not previously having back-to-back double-digit scoring performances, Smith is now on a four-game streak, which includes two consecutive career-high efforts. Smith enters Wednesday's contest coming off a career-high 17 points against High Point, Saturday.
Climbing the Ladder
John Caleb Sanders is now 15th all-time on Liberty's scoring list with 1,240 points, surpassing his older brother and 2011 Big South Player of the Year Jesse Sanders (1,235 points). John Caleb now needs nine more points to pass Julius Nwosu (1,248) for the 14th spot. The younger Sanders looks to bounce back from a seven-point performance against High Point, his second lowest point total of the season.
Through the first four conference games, Liberty is tied with VMI for No. 1 in rebounding offense in Big South action, averaging 39.8 boards per game. The Flames are also No. 1 in rebounding defense, holding conference opponents to 29.3 rebounds per contest.
