Liberty Defeats North Carolina Central, 6-1, For Second Win of the Day

Against NCCU, freshman Maria Khval improved to 2-0 on the season in both singles and doubles play.

The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team made it two for two on Saturday, defeating the North Carolina Central Eagles, 6-1, at the Greenbriar Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Liberty, off to its first 2-0 start since the 2007 season, also knocked off Morehead State, 6-1, on Saturday morning. NCCU drops its season opener to fall to 0-1.

"This is a great start to the season," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "The girls shook off some nerves and played well against two quality teams. The girls were excited after the match, but are already setting their sights on the next contest."

The Lady Flames began the day with a sweep of the doubles contests. Rebekah Jenkins and Maria Khval earned their second win of the day, downing Rebecca Wood and Ekaterina Nekrasova, 6-2, in the No. 1 position. Mariely Hassey and Annisha Domenech followed with a dominant 6-1 win against Tamara Jeremic and Lynsey Cover in the No. 3 spot to secure the doubles tally for Liberty. Brittany Yang and Valerie Thong made it a perfect three for three in doubles matches for the Lady Flames with a 6-4 victory out of the No. 2 position against Aissa Muamba and Mia Ramic.

Liberty earned the win with three consecutive victories to open singles action. Belen Rivera routed Ramic, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 4 position. Cameron Richard picked up a victory in the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-1, against Cover. Hassey sealed the Lady Flames' second win of the year with a 6-0, 6-4 straight-set ousting of Nekrasova at No. 3.

Wood earned NCCU's one point of the match, knocking off Jenkins, 6-3, 6-2, in the top slot.

The Lady Flames closed the day with wins in the No. 6 and No. 2 positions. Lauren Mabe collected her first collegiate dual-match victory with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory versus Jermic, before Khval picked up her second win of the day, 6-3, 6-2, against Muamba.

Liberty resumes play on Feb. 25 against Big 12 foe West Virginia. The contest is slated to begin at 3 p.m. at the Charleston Indoor Racquet Club in Charleston, W.Va.
