3 Lady Flames Named to VaSID All-State Team
Nearly two months after capturing its fourth Big South Championship, the Liberty women's soccer team continues to rack up postseason awards. Goalkeeper Holly Van Noord, midfielder Brittany Aanderud and defender Casey Norris have been selected to the 2014 VaSID All-State University Division women's soccer team.
Van Noord was voted VaSID Rookie of the Year while also earning first team honors. Aanderud also picked up a spot on the first team, while Norris was named to the second team.
Voting for the team is conducted by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). The all-state team honors the best Division I women's soccer players in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In her first active season, Van Noord made a statement in 2013, breaking a single-season school and conference record with 14 shutouts. A second team Big South All-Conference and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region third team selection, Van Noord also led the conference in goals-against average (0.718) and save percentage (.850). The netminder concluded the year 23rd in the country in save percentage and 31st in goals-against average. On Sept. 9, Van Noord was named Big South and ECAC Player of the Week for her pair of shutout performances against Drexel and Saint Joseph's.
Aanderud, who also garnered first team Big South All-Conference and NSCAA All-Region second team honors, this season, cemented her name in the program record books. She closed the year with a single-season school record and conference-leading 10 assists. The sophomore concluded 2013 at No. 3 all-time in program history with 15 helpers. Along with being Liberty's primary distributor, Aanderud also tied for the team lead with six goals and was voted tournament MVP for her performance during the 2013 Big South Women's Soccer Championship.
Like Aanderud and Van Noord, Norris also marked her name in the Liberty record books. On Senior Day, she set a new program record for the most games played in program history, surpassing Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Nancy Davis (1998-2001, 78 games). The Pittsboro, N.C., native concluded her collegiate career appearing in 84 total contests. In addition to her defensive effort which helped garner a record-breaking 14 shutouts, the senior also recorded the game-winning assist in Liberty's 1-0 victory over Charleston Southern (Sept. 25) and kick started the Lady Flames' attack with the initial goal in their 7-0 win versus Campbell (Sept. 28).
Liberty concluded 2013 with a 16-6-1 mark, setting a new single-season program record for most wins. Defensively, the Lady Flames' program-best 14 shutouts also tied a Big South record.
The Lady Flames captured their fourth Big South Championship and first since 2005, defeating Radford in the final on Nov. 10, 5-0. Liberty's goal total marked the most goals in a Big South final match.
