Liberty Holds Off Anderson in Exhibition, 69-66

Visiting Anderson erased a 22-point deficit to take a late lead during Thursday afternoon's exhibition game at the Vines Center. However, the Liberty duo of Ashley Rininger and Jaymee Fisher-Davis helped the Lady Flames come away with a 69-66 victory on the second annual "Best Field Trip Ever Day."
More than 600 local elementary and middle school students looked on as the defending South Atlantic Conference champion Trojans (7-3) fashioned a late 17-1 run. Katie Davis' hoop from close range at 3:42 put Anderson in front, 61-60.
But Liberty (4-5) countered with a 7-0 game-sealing burst, consisting of two free throws and a putback hoop by Rininger and Fisher-Davis' third triple of the game. The sophomore's trifecta gave the Lady Flames a 67-61 lead with just 1:29 to play, and Liberty went on to close out a three-point win.
For the game, Rininger led all players with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Fisher-Davis added 11 points, which would have set a new career high if it had been a regular-season tilt.
Liberty got off to a fast start, opening up an 11-point lead (20-9) within the first 5:11 of the game.
Anderson battled back, tying the score at 24-24 on Madison Floyd's jumper with 7:59 remaining in the opening half.
Aided by back-to-back Fisher-Davis three-pointers, the Lady Flames opened up another double-digit advantage at the end of the opening half. Liberty scored 16 of the period's final 19 points, taking a 42-29 lead into the locker room.
Liberty used its size advantage to good effect in the first half, posting a 24-11 rebounding edge and a 20-6 cushion in points in the paint.
Rininger paced all players in both points (15) and rebounds (6) in the first half. Davis' eight first-half points topped the Trojans' scorers.
The Lady Flames carried their momentum from the end of the first half into the second half, opening the period with a 9-0 run. Emily Frazier's layup off of a nice feed from Mickayla Sanders fell through the hoop at 17:25, making the score 51-29 in favor of the home team.
Anderson then began its furious late comeback effort, which was spurred on by five second-half three-pointers.
Liberty finished the game at just 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the floor. However, the Lady Flames were able to score 28 points off of Anderson's 23 turnovers and win the rebounding battle by a 43-34 count.
Anderson shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field, including eight triples.
Katelyn Adams made it three Lady Flames in double figures, posting 11 points and six rebounds.
Four Anderson players scored in double digits during the matinee, including Davis (14 points), Sierra Simpson (12), Heather Jankowy (12) and Emily Willoughby (10).
Liberty will close out the non-conference portion of its 2013-14 schedule next Thursday (Dec. 19), when the Lady Flames travel to UNCW. Tipoff is slated for 11:30 a.m. at Trask Coliseum.
