LFSN 2013 Opponent Preview: Charleston Southern
Both Liberty and Charleston Southern will close out their regular-season schedule on Saturday at Buccaneer Field in a game that will determine the conference championship.
Charleston Southern enters the game ranked No. 18 in the Sports Network poll and No. 16 in the FCS Coaches poll with a 10-2 overall record and a 3-1 mark in Big South play. The Buccaneers suffered their first Big South setback of the year last weekend, falling, 27-10, at Gardner-Webb.
Liberty has won its last four games and enters the road contest with a 7-4 overall mark and the same 3-1 record in the Big South. Should the Flames claim their eighth-straight victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday, Liberty would share the 2013 Big South title with Coastal Carolina (10-1, 4-1 BSC) and the Chanticleers would claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs (Coastal Carolina beat Liberty earlier this year).
If Charleston Southern moves to 5-0 at home this year with a win over Liberty, the Buccaneers would share the regular season title with Coastal Carolina, but claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs based upon their 31-26 victory over the Chanticleers two weeks ago on Nov. 9.
Liberty and Charleston Southern have the top two scoring defenses in the Big South. Liberty ranks No. 1 in the Big South and No. 7 in the country, allowing 17.9 points per game. The Buccaneers are second in the conference and No. 16 in the country, allowing 20.6 points per game.
Both teams have had success running the football in 2013, combining to rush for 52 touchdowns and 4,865 yards. Charleston Southern ranks second in the league, averaging 236.5 rushing yards per game (21 rushing touchdowns, 2,838 yards) and Liberty's 184.3 rushing yards per game ranks third (31 rushing touchdowns, 2,027 yards).
The 21st-consecutive matchup between the two programs will air on ESPN3. As part of the Big South television package, instant replay will be available to both head coaches.
Pregame radio coverage will begin at 10 a.m. on the Liberty Flames Sports Network and the game will kick off at 11:04 a.m. from Buccaneer Field. For more information about the game, visit Liberty's Game Day Central page.
