Lacrosse Names Captains for 2014 Season
Seniors Nina Dunay and Jillian Krick, along with junior Sam Struss, have been tabbed team captains for the Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse team for the upcoming 2014 season. The three captains will provide leadership to a squad which features a young core of 20 players who are either freshmen or sophomores. Dunay, Krick and Struss will each assume the captain role for the first time in their Liberty careers.
A 2013 Big South second-team all-conference member, Dunay paced the Lady Flames with 29 goals, 69 shots and 50 shots on goal last season. The midfielder finished second on the squad in points (36) and caused turnovers (19) and in the top five on the team in assists (7), ground balls (28) and draw controls (33). The senior currently ranks second on the program's career list in goals (77), points (98) and shots (152).
Krick returns for her senior season after starting all 18 games of the 2013 campaign on defense. The Harrisburg, Pa., native tied for fifth on the squad in ground balls with 24 last season. Krick recorded seven double-digit ground ball games and also added five caused turnovers and two draw controls for the year. Krick will be called upon to anchor a defense which lost a pair of senior leaders in Chloe McIntosh and Amber Nichols from last season's squad.
Struss registered starts in all 18 contests last season, posting a team-high 40 points and 21 assists. The junior ranked ninth in the Big South with 1.17 assists per game. Struss tallied 19 goals on 46 shots. The Evans City, Pa., native posted a single-game program record seven assists on March 1 at Delaware State. Struss is the current program leader in career assists with 26. On April 20 at Longwood, Struss matched her single-game goal high with three tallies, giving her five multiple-goal games for the year.
The Lady Flames, under the direction of first-year head coach Kelly Nangle, open the 2014 season on Feb. 7 at Richmond. Liberty's home opener is set for Feb. 21 against Elon.
