Leatherwood Signs with Lady Flames
Three games into the 2013-14 season, Liberty Head Women's Basketball Coach Carey Green has bolstered his backcourt for the future. He announced that Candice Leatherwood has signed a national letter of intent to attend Liberty University for the 2014-15 academic year.
"We are excited to have Candice join our Liberty family," stated Green. "She shares the same values that our program and university embrace. It's her character, along with her athletic skills, that will have a definite impact on our team."
Candice Leatherwood (G, 5-7, Detroit, Mich.)
Leatherwood has been an integral part of Mercy High School's success on the hardwood the last three seasons. The Marlins have gone 52-18 during that time, winning a pair of district championships as well as the Catholic League (CHSL) title in 2010-11.
Leatherwood was a CHSL All-League performer as a freshman, before earning All-Catholic distinction each of the last two seasons. Last season, she was recognized as one of Michigan's best, including second team all-state accolades from the Detroit Free Press, honorable mention all-state honors from the Detroit News and all-state mention from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
The top statistics of her high school career to date came during Leatherwood's junior season, when she averaged 12 points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds per game, while shooting 44 percent from the field and 72 percent from the foul line.
Leatherwood chose Liberty over Eastern Michigan and Kent State because, "Liberty has the kind of structure and discipline that I'm used to on and off the court, and that was the main reason I chose to go here. From the start of the recruiting process, they have welcomed me in with open arms and treated me like family."
What They're Saying about Candice Leatherwood
"It was during the summer AAU schedule that she really got our attention. Candice played for one of the nation's elite AAU programs, the Michigan Crossover. Her team participated in the highest level of competition, which included the Nike Nationals. Candice will play at the combo guard position. She will add driving and attacking pressure on both sides of the ball. We are thankful to have her bring such character and a tremendous work ethic to our team. She is a perfect fit!"
Carey Green, Liberty Head Women's Basketball Coach
"Candice is a great combo guard who can contribute in many different ways, such as scoring as a very explosive attack guard and being a pesky defender. She also possesses a great positive attitude with the willingness to get better. Candice was a tremendous asset to the Michigan Crossover organization."
Monique Brown, AAU Coach for Michigan Crossover
"Candice has played with poise beyond her years since her freshman season. She has a high basketball IQ and is the ideal point guard, in that she finds her teammates, defends well, and is a capable shooter and scorer. Candice initially was a quiet leader who led by example, but has now become a vocal leader and an excellent captain."
