Thomas and Azuero Advance at USTA/ITA National Indoors
Thomas and Azuero defeated the Memphis pairing of David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury, 8-7 (6) to move to the round of 16, tomorrow. The quarterfinals begin at 9:00 a.m. O'Hare and Salisbury entered the tournament ranked No. 18 nationally.
"We fought off five match points today to pull through to the final eight teams," reported Liberty men's tennis head coach Chris Johnson. "These guys never quit and they never stop giving God the glory either."
"It just goes to prove again that who is ‘better' is defined on game day!"
The Liberty tandem will face the nation's No. 1 ranked doubles team and the tournament's top seeded pairing, Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese of Tennessee, tomorrow morning. Libietis and Reese defeated Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech, 8-1, today.
Thomas and Azuero became the first-ever Liberty doubles team to win a regional title two weeks ago with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Bjerrhus and Contini at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Oct. 28. The Liberty duo's victory earned them a bye in the first round of this weekend's National Collegiate Indoor Championships.
