Liberty Sweeps NorPac East Weekly Awards
The Liberty Lady Flames field hockey team earned a clean sweep of the NorPac East Division weekly honors, as announced Monday by the conference. Natalie Barr was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Hannah Jones and Serena Barr earned Defensive and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
It is the second time in program history that the Lady Flames have collected a clean sweep of the weekly awards. Last season, Natalie Barr combined with Mallory Cuccio and Abbey Basom to claim the three awards on Oct. 22.
The award is Natalie Barr's third Offensive Player of the Week plaudit this season and sixth of her career. Hannah Jones claims her first career defensive honor, while Serena Barr nabs the Rookie of the Week award for the second consecutive week. Liberty now has earned 10 weekly awards this season.
Jones and the Barr sisters helped lead the Lady Flames to a perfect 2-0 week, upping their record to 11-4 (5-0 NorPac) overall this season. Liberty downed Longwood 6-1, before collecting its fourth shutout of the year, 7-0, yesterday versus Georgetown.
Natalie Barr recorded her second consecutive hat trick last Thursday at home against Longwood in a showdown of the top two teams in the NorPac East division. Barr tallied three goals and an assist, giving her a league-best 14 goals and nine assists this season. The sophomore has been her best in league play, tallying 10 goals and five assists in five games. On Sunday against Georgetown, Barr kept the pressure on the Hoyas' defense, notching nine shots as Liberty ran its winning streak to six games with the victory.
Jones played every minute on defense last week. The back was a steadying force for a defense which surrendered just one goal, seven shots and four penalty corners in two games. Jones and the rest of the Lady Flames' defense shut down the Longwood attack early, holding the Lancers to zero shots and zero penalty corners in the opening half. Against Georgetown, Jones helped keep the Hoyas' offense out of the circle for the majority of the contest, allowing just one shot per half and two total penalty corner attempts.
Serena Barr notched back-to-back multiple-goal games last week. Against second-place Longwood, Barr tallied two goals on four shots, before posting two goals and an assist versus Georgetown. The freshman upped her season point total to 21 points (8 goals, 5 assists). Barr also was a key contributer on defense, helping hold the Lady Flames' opponents to just one goal, seven shots and four penalty corners in two games.
Liberty will make its final road trip of the season this weekend against a pair of NorPac opponents. The Lady Flames square off against Davidson on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Appalachian State at noon on Sunday.
