2014 Liberty Softball Spring Schedule
A pair of matchups with defending national champion Oklahoma highlights Liberty's 2014 softball schedule, as released today by first-year head coach Dot Richardson and her coaching staff.
The Lady Flames will compete in at least 10 games against teams which qualified for the 2013 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, including the Oklahoma Sooners, who won their second national title last season. Liberty opens the schedule with 23 straight games away from Lynchburg, before opening the home slate on March 14 against Campbell. Fans will get to see the Lady Flames play 19 home games this season.
Liberty begins the campaign at a tournament hosted by Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla., Feb. 7-9. The team's season opener is against 2013 NCAA Regional qualifier Western Kentucky of the Sun Belt Conference. The Lady Flames will also face Georgetown, the SEC's Ole Miss, and host FGCU while in Fort Myers.
The next weekend sees the squad compete in the UNCW Tournament, Feb. 14-16, where Liberty will meet Norfolk State, UMBC and UNCW.
The Lady Flames play at the Spartan Classic in Spartanburg, S.C., Feb. 21-23. The host USC Upstate Spartans are the defending Atlantic Sun tournament champions. Liberty will also meet Southern Conference opponents Furman and Western Carolina.
From Feb. 28 through March 2, Liberty competes at the 49er Invitational in Charlotte, taking on Charlotte, Georgetown and 2013 America East champion Stony Brook.
Liberty opens Spring Break with a four-game stint in Norman, Okla., March 7-9, where the Lady Flames will contest two games against both defending national champion Oklahoma and Western Illinois. The Lady Flames will then close out the early portion of their non-conference schedule with a doubleheader at George Washington on March 12.
After spending the first month of the campaign on the road, Liberty will open its home schedule with a Big South Conference series against Campbell, March 14-15. That begins a stretch where Liberty will play 13 out of 16 games at home.
The team then heads to Farmville, Va., to take on defending Big South champion Longwood, March 18-19.
A weekend home series against N.C. Central on March 21 and 22 kicks off a 10-game homestand. Liberty will then face East Tennessee State, Charleston Southern and UNCG.
The Lady Flames then hit the road for Big South series at Coastal Carolina (April 5-6) and Radford (April 8-9), before returning home for a weekend set against Gardner-Webb (April 11-12).
Liberty steps outside of conference play on April 16, with a doubleheader against 2013 NCAA Regional participant Virginia Tech.
The Lady Flames host Winthrop on April 18-19, the team's last home games of the season.
After an April 23 twin bill at Virginia of the ACC, Liberty closes out the regular-season schedule with a conference series at Presbyterian College, April 26-27.
Liberty will compete in the 2014 Big South Softball Championship, hosted by Coastal Carolina, from May 8-11. The Big South champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, which will begin the weekend of May 15.
