Lady Flames to Participate in ITA Atlantic Regional
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad makes the short trip to Charlottesville, Va. this weekend to compete in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships. Matches at the Snyder Tennis Center commence tomorrow morning with the qualifying singles draw and will wrap up on Tuesday.
The Lady Flames will send four singles competitors and two doubles pairs to the tournament, which also features players from 24 other programs. The event also boasts seven nationally ranked singles players and three nationally ranked doubles tandems.
Freshman Mariely Hassey and sophomore Brittany Yang open play for Liberty tomorrow morning in the qualifying singles draw, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Hassey faces George Washington's Taylor Nederlander, while Yang is pitted against Amanda Wickman of Pittsburgh.
"I feel extremely blessed for the opportunity to play at regionals this weekend," commented Hassey. "I know we are all ready to compete and I cannot wait to see what God has in store for our team."
Doubles action gets under way at 3 p.m. with both Liberty tandems taking to the court. Maria Khval and Belen Rivera will challenge Marie Bedard and Carmen Sandor of Penn State and Valerie Thong and Yang take on William & Mary's Nabila Farah and Leeza Nemchinov.
The Lady Flames have two players playing in the main draw in Khval and Rivera. Both Khval and Rivera will compete at 1 p.m. on Saturday against seeded opponents. Khval goes up against 14th seed Dana Oppinger of Marshall, while Rivera will look to upset third-seeded Stephanie Nauta of Virginia.
Rebekah Jenkins is an alternate for both singles and doubles play.
